90Rock on 88.7

For the last couple days there has been a station on 88.7 calling itself 90Rock. My friend is getting them in Greentree and I can get them in West Mifflin. The signal is best with my antenna pointed north west.
They seem to be overmodding real bad but it could be interference due to the week signal.
They are saying they are from West Point PA but there hasn't been any other form of ID.

West Point PA is in the Phiily area around Norristown.

There is nothing licensed in Western PA on 88.7. The St Vincent DePaul Society has a construction permit for 2500 watts on 88.7 in Connellsville, but there's currently nothing on the FCC site west of State College.

My vague understanding of these new LPFM rules are that they don't necessarily require a license, but if you break any rules for this type of service they then consider you to be on illegally.

There is no legal unlicensed LPFM with power levels enough to be heard off-premises. If you can hear it for more than a few feet, a license is required.

That said, there are quite a few illegal stations that aren't being prosecuted.

Haven't heard any lately, but have found some interesting pirates over the last forty years around the area. Considering the state of radio today, they are a breath of fresh air. If they're technically clean they don't bother me. The only one that does is the November to January Hartwood Acres Christmas loop. Same transmitter that our wonderful friends at clear channel use during the summer in the Starlake parking lot. Dam thing runs 24 / 7 at Hartwood for the Celebration of Lights. A good pirate is far more fun to listen to than the religious K-Loves and translators that do nothing more than clog up the spectrum ! This is one way that the FCC will have their excuse to find no available large market frequencies for LPFM !

Quick question: Any possibility we're talking about bleeding from nearby subscribers bringing in a satellite station and using FM 88.7 as a clear frequency? There also is an 88.7 in Wheeling but it rebroadcasts religious programming from Florida.

No chance of satellite radio. Since it was heard in both Greentree and West Mifflin it certainly wasn't any sort of localized bleedthrough. They were running a classic rock format with liners stating that this is radio for the Woodstock generation and no commercials no DJ's just your favorite classic trax on 90Rock.

AAARRRRGH! I'm smellin' a pirate!!
There is a phrase regarding 19th century whaling ships that comes to mind and your comment illustrates in a brand new way, however, given changes in our society, I must paraphrase a '60s song: But if I really say it, the website might not play it, so I must infer it between the lines.
