90's-friendly Dance station on 770 AM?

A few nights ago, I was scanning the AM band in the car. On 770 AM, primarily occupied by KKOB/Albuquerque (News/Talk), I also heard one of the 90's Max-a-Million dance hits in the background (I think it was "Fat Boy"). I was able to hear the signal just long enough to catch the next song. I didn't recognize it, but it was definitely a dance selection and it sounded very 90's-ish.

Living in Phoenix -- where receiving AM stations from South of the border certainly seems possible -- I wonder if this could have been a station of Mexican origin. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/770_AM, these are the three stations broadcasting on that frequency in Mexico:

* XEANT-AM in Tancanhuitz de Santos, San Luis Potosí
* XEHUA in Santa Cruz Huatulco, OA
* XEMRO in Matias Romero, OA

Any ideas?

HMM thats really interesting,, I would ask David Eduardo on the Latin American board,, that is if I dont beat ya to it.... Great Catch man..... Dance music on AM... I do know that Dance music shows up on Shortwave from time to time,, most of those are usually pirates and only broadcast for a few hours a day,, or even sometimes just once a week or so.... If the station is legit and really in Mexico, im sure MR Eduardo is well aware of it,,,, it could have just been a specialty show, or it may have been Winter Skip from somewhere really far away,,, maybe even over seas, like Japan,, Thats a long shot as thats a really long way and I dont know if they use the same AM band as U.S.... but Anyway,, try and see if it comes in tonight.

Hmm, a few nights ago..... you didn't what time it was exactly.. but could you possibly have heard "Radio K" KUOM 770 Minneapolis, MN? It's the student run station at The Unniversity of Minneapolis... it is a 5KW Non Directional Daytimer.

If this was right before of after sunset in either your locale or theres, anything is possible.

I doubt it was minneapolis because I have Dance Fan Friends in Minnesota and Duluth and they have never heard it,, plus if it was in Minneapolis I would have heard it by now,,, except 770 is usually squahed out by 780 WBBM Chicago, and 760 WJR Detroit.

That would be pretty funny, and I think WABC used to play music,,, but no way would that signal make it to Phoenix,,, I usually cant get it in Indiana,,, only every once in a blue moon, and it usually takes extreme cold temps to make it through WBBM and WJR.

Just because you can't hear it, doesn't mean someone else can't.. I've seen some amazing things happen with DX.

Then you need new friends. Radio K does occasionally play some.

Following up to some of the questions/points raised...

- I heard this well after sunset...at least 8pm...probably later than that. I wish I'd written it down at the time. I'm certain that I heard dance on AM one other time in recent weeks...not sure if it was on 770 though.

- I'll try again tonight. The problem is that I was driving home from a different part of town at the time. The reception was long gone by the time I got to my place. I almost want to drive up that way again tonight just to see if I can pick it up. Hey, gas is back down to $2 a gallon now, so why not ;)

- DJ Perry, I also remember Beat Radio very well. It was always hard to hear it because of KCBS 740 from San Francisco.

- With seemingly so many dance/Energy haters on the Phoenix board, I will probably refrain from posting about this over there.

Okay, so here's what you do,,, or we do, cause im curious as well... Email the Minneapolis station and ask them if they were playing any Dance music that night?? And if so you heard them in Phoenix, I bet they would be thrilled with such a DX report.. Thats. Step ONE..

Step Two.. Find David Eduardo on possibly the Latin America Board,,, or he is really all over the place,, if any of the 770s south of the boarder air any Dance programs he most likely knows.. He isnt a fan of dance music, but he is knowledgable and will answer your questions.. He is over all a pretty good guy.

Well, I contacted David Eduardo today and he gave me a list of a bunch of stations that actually broadcast on 770 in Mexico,, Much more than the FCC Database claims,,, he also said its not uncommon at all to hear US POP including Dance Music from the US and Europe on these stations, and some are on some pretty powerful signals that are directional North.. He guesses it was one of two stations,, check out the Mexico board for the complete discussion...

Thanks...I heard what I assume what was the same station again on Monday night. I posted my findings on that thread on the Mexico board.

For DJ Perry, or anyone else in the Valley reading this who is interested in trying to pick up this station...in the areas I've driven, the signal is definitely the strongest at Scottsdale Road & Shea Blvd (it actually sounds better than KKOB there!), and then again on Shea between Hayden Road and the 101. It's almost impossible to receive it on Shea west of Scottsdale Road...same for SR-51 between Shea and Indian School Road.

I haven't tried picking up the station in other parts of town...yet!

I finally got a chance to tune in to 770am last night (which was cloudy here in Az) and what i Heard was a talk station from New Mexico. No dance or any music for that matter, but I did catch a Crusin Oldies on 550am....couldn't catch any ID's

770 from New Mexico is KKOB. It's dominant almost everywhere over the mystery 770 from (I assume) Mexico.
