90s hits for the beaches

KSTB Crystal Beach, left for dead after Ike, has resurfaced with an "Everything 90s" format called Energy. Not sure when it debuted; perhaps it was last week while I was in Chicago and Michigan. As the name implies, it's uptempo with a typically wide small town playlist. A sample hour (2:30-3:30 PM yesterday):

Offspring "Come Out and Play"
En Vogue "Never Gonna Get It"
sweep
Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight"
Destiny's Child "Bugaboo"
sweep
Qkumba Zoo Child Inside
sweep
Shakespeare's Sister "Stay"
Blessid Union of Souls "She Likes Me For Me"
Legal ID
Kid Rock "Cowboy"
sweep
Mighty Dub Katz "Magic Carpet Ride"
Boy Krazy "That's What Love can Do"
Savage Garden "I Want You"
2Pac "How Do You Want It"
New Order "Regret"
Foo Fighters "Everlong"
Divinyls "I Touch Myself"

No jocks or commercials, but the station might be running on an auxiliary transmitter; the only listenable area is Crystal Beach itself, and reception drops sharply at the ferry landing.

Had it been me running the station, as a statement that they have returned to the air after many months of inactivity, I would have named the station "101.5 Ike-FM."

Or is it too soon?

Are we sure this is actually KSTB and not a pirate? Any legal ID?

Per the monitor posted above, they did a legal between Blessid Union of Souls and Kid Rock.

I heard something to the extent that they're running this out of a trailer at the transmitter site to keep the license alive.

After reading Sean Ross yesterday, it got me thinking about what a beach format might sound like over there. I'd play some of those songs.

I'd probably listen to this station if I could receive it...

I wish The Point or Pat FM (HD2) had a wider playlist. I can only stand ZZ Top, Joan Jett, and Twisted Sister so many times.

Sounds a lot like the Gen X station that Citadel recently launched in Baton Rouge.

Sounds interesting... I'll have to see if I can pick it up out here in Atascocita

Not likely. As I mentioned, the signal is essentially limited to Crystal Beach proper; after the ferry landing, it's almost pure static.

Interestingly, the sweepers and ID never mention the frequency; it's always "Energy," but never "Energy 101.5" or similar.

Love the variety of the playlist! Sounds just as good, if not a deeper playlist, than the original XM 90s on 9 when it first came out.

I totally forgot about Qkumba Zoo. Haven't heard that since it came out!

I think you'd be alright, DtotheJ. Days after Katrina blew through N.O. WRNO, at the time a rock station, ID'ed as " The Rock of New Orleans, WRNO, New Orleans. Take that Katrina!" It's all about how you present it.

Looks like KSTB is being used as testing grounds. If Cumulus were just keeping the license active, couldn't they've just simulcasted KAYD again with the temporary signal?

Perhaps this is a test run of the next format for 103.7?

no.

Would there ever be any way for them to move closer to Galveston, or are they sandboxed in (no pun intended) by KLOL and have to stay on the Bolivar Peninsula?

That station was downgraded to what it is now to facilitate the other moves that put 103.7 or 97.5 closer to Houston, if I recall correctly. Before it was downgraded you could get it as far north as Clear Lake on a regular basis and I could DX it near the Galleria if I was lucky.

I always thought KSTB was downgraded so KAYD 101.7 in Beaumont could upgrade or move closer to center of the Beaumont market.

That's it. The bad news is that KSTB barely covers their community of license with a city-grade signal and there's no hope of them moving closer to Galveston. They barely clear the required separation to KLOL and are actually slightly short-spaced to KMJQ. Besides that, with the move (and upgrade) of KPTY 104.9 from Crystal Beach to Winnie KSTB has to remain licensed where it is so that Crystal Beach will retain its only "local" service.

IIRC, KSTB was licensed to another community before the downgrade as well. I distinctly remember it being "The Star of the Bay" with a good signal from Baybrook area down to the causeway. Seems like it was Clear Lake City. Was a pretty good local station back in its day.

With what's left of Crystal Beach's population after Ike, I'd assume there would be a way out for Cumulus if they had the desire to move KSTB off of the sand dune. jd, slight correction to your post: 104.9 moved from Missouri City to Deer Park. 105.3 is the one that is in the process of relocating to Winnie coupled with 100.7 KKHT heading up the road to Lumberton.

Why is that, by the way? What benefit is KKHT getting out of moving to Lumberton, and what would be the issue with Winnie having 2 services? In my estimation, KKHT gets squat in this deal as it does nothing except change the COL. There would have to be some sort of financial compensation being sent to Salem for their time and trouble, or else I'd be telling Univision thanks but no thanks. As I recall, these wheels were set in motion by Univision when they owned both 100.7 & 105.3. Made sense then, but not so much now.

Or, they'll just let the hard drive spin and keep the needles moving and write it off as the cost of doing business in Beaumont.

There are lot of 'moves', whether they take place or not, that make no sense. Another announced move to Lumberton in the past was KYKZ-FM from Lake Charles. This did not and apparently will not occur.

Another curious 'move' by Cumulus is that of KQXY from a tower east of Beaumont, to the Silsbee area. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=30.33750,+-94.14694+%28KQXY-FM%29&om=1 This makes no sense, and I'm not sure what could be behind it.

I sometimes wonder if anyone at Cumulus has any idea what they are doing.
