90s music on CHR

We're over a decade removed from the 1990s and I'm curious about how much 90s (if any at all) are CHRs around the country playing. Y101 here in Jackson may play one or two a day (maybe more but I don't listen 24/7). Usually, the songs they play are rap or rhythmic in nature ("Baby Got Back", "O.P.P.", "Always Be My Baby"), with an occasional "Iris" thrown in.

Should there be any 90s music on CHR?

hmmm...CHR is all about today's music...so I'd say no. When I turn on the hit music station I'm ready for Ke$ha and Nelly.

BUT...songs like OPP wouldn't be appropriate on alot of Hot AC's, so idk where else the song could be played today.

The couple 90s songs you hear on your station are probably just added in by the dj's to spice things up every now and again, I doubt they are on the music log/playlist. I don't know this though -- only my wild guess.

I was looking at WYOY's log from Thursday and they did play "Back That Thang Up" by Juvenile and "All the Small Things" from Blink 182. The Juvenile song recently started getting airplay, while the Blink 182 song has been in and out of the gold rotation for quite some time.

Puff Daddys Ill Be Missing You and a few crossover hits are in rotation on a few CHR stations. Another one is Mo Money More Problems. I also here No Doubts Dont Speak every now in then. I live in Los Angeles so KIIS and AMP will play a few 90's hits. Im still surprised that KIIS plays songs from the Late Selena Dreaming Of You and I Can Fall In Love.

A while ago I remember WKKF played three 90s rap/R&B songs in a row, followed by Paramore. Talk about weird. ;P

Around here, WKKF and WFLY play a bit of 90s but I think WKKF plays more 90s than WFLY, especially on weekends (we now have a Gen X station called "Crush FM" which is based in the 90s :))

So am I. Maybe to appease the Hispanic audience?

More than likely since the majority of KIIS listeners are Hispanic. I also heard Q100 in Atlanta plays a few 90's Alternative hits despite some listeners calling it Adult Top 40. Same thing in Kansas City with KMXV there Adult Top 40. They still play GreenDay

I think it's only a good idea in really small markets where there's no Hot AC

IMO the only exception is possibly 90s hip-hop like California Love and Mo Money Mo Problems that can't be heard anywhere else

Yeah...that's a good market for a CHR to play some older stuff occasionally.

It's all about how you want to position your station in the market you are in.

Well I love hearing 808 remix by Blaque on KZON. I also kind of like hearing "Knocking boots" by Candyman and Selena, but I wish they'd also play "My boo" by Ghost town Dj's from time to time!

I think KZZP plays that. Last time I checked, I also remember hearing some Eve, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., maybe Outkast, and more on KZZP during the day. Not sure if that still happens as much these days on KZZP since I've mostly been glued to KZON.

If I want to hear Naughty By Nature or Bel Biv Divoe...etc. or maybe some Ja Rule or Juvenile, I'll just tune in to Arizona's Classic Hip Hop on KNRJ.

Any Stevie B, Nocera, Will II Power, Afrika Bambaataa, Shannon Cover Girls, Xpose....etc, with Sugar Hill Gang, SOS Band, Earth Wind & Fire...etc, I go to KAJM Arizona's Old School.

If I want to hear Real McCoy with Rihanna, Counting Crows, Black Eyed Peas boom boom pow, UB40, Bon Jovi, Usher, Ace of Base, Tom Cochrane, Cee-Lo, Ke$ha, Outkast, Arethra Franklin.... Tone Loc, Eminem, The Police...etc. then I JUST GO TO KPKX!

Ok, maybe all of those stations aren't chr's, but... man, do I love Phoenix radio!

I honestly think there needs to be a new format centered around '90s and early '00s recurrents that isn't afraid to play songs that may be a little edgy, you know, the songs we actually listened to back then. AC and Hot AC won't touch a lot of the music from that era because it much of not appropriate for an "At-Work Station". Currently there are no stations playing much from that era except for the occasional spin of "California Love" which is a classic. Pop2K on XM does a very good job at this format, now throw in the second half of the '90s and you would have a solid AC format appealing to a generation aging beyond that of CHR's target audience.

Isn't this what most of the 90's stations that have popped up are doing? Check out www.channel1067.com -- they play the edgy stuff up to about 2005 that most Hot ACs and certainly most ACs won't touch.

There are a few "Gen X" stations sprinkled across the country. Here is a good example of one from Tulsa that plays a nice balance of pop, rock and rhythm:

http://www.yes.com/#KTGX

It is mostly 90s based station, though I have them play anything from as old as Simple Minds "Don't You Forgot About Me" (1985) to as recent as Justin Timberlake "Sexyback" (2006).

I'm also surprised that they still play classic Michael Jackson from 1983. "Billie Jean" being played among the currents hits is not that uncommon. KIIS played "P.Y.T" on Wednesday 1:38pm. Sure he had a spike in airplay shortly after his passing, but it is now almost 2 years ago since that...and it is still spiked in as a gold.

Personally, as long as it is the right songs and is used in moderation, I don't have a problem with this. In fact, I think it can be a nice tribute to heritage stations like KIIS.

107.5 WKZL/Greensboro plays No Doubt/Just A Girl, No Doubt/Don't Speak, No Doubt/Spiderwebs, Eve 6/Inside Out, Natalie Imbruglia/Torn, Green Day/When I Come Around, Sublime/What I Got, Pras Michel.../Ghetto Superstar, Sir Mix-A-Lot/Baby Got Back, Mariah Carey/Fantasy, 2PAC/Changes, Will Smith/Miami, Notorious B. I. G..../Mo Money Mo Problems, and even Salt 'N' Pepa/Push It and Rob Base.../It Takes Two (both from the late 80s I think)

There's no Hot AC in that market though
