91.5 FM in Binghamton

I was listening to WSQX when in range of its signal recently, and that got me to wondering about the history of that frequency in Binghamton. I can barely recall the Urban format of WUCI in the late 80s when I heard it. Who was behind that station? Was it a 24/7 Urban format? Was it staffed by professionals or volunteers? When did they go dark? Was it the only other station/format besides WSQX to occupy the channel?

I can tell you that it was volunteer ran, I believe there were 8 DJs all together. I can recall most of the DJs, but not all. Ashimba Tariq was the owner and because of his mishandlings it is no longer there. Kingsley Hines was the GM. I'm sure Mo Taylor can provide more insight.

What were the sign on and sign off dates? I'm assuming that the antenna was on WICZ's tower, as the phone in the WMXW transmitter building has WUCI engraved on it.

Well interndj,

You pretty much covered it...The first PD/MD was Al Wood (he has moved on to WBLK in Buffalo). After Ashimba left, Kinglsey then was the GM. All volunteer. The format was primarily Urban (Rap & R&B)....They had a couple of mix shows on Friday and Saturday. Raggae on Sunday evenings. Had a Gospel shows here and there and especially on Sunday mornings. I did a Urban Top 40 show every weekday from 10a-2p. I also did "Jazz on the Lighter Side" on Sunday afternoons from 4-7. That was a Smooth Jazz show (Long before they called it "Smooth Jazz". We had a lot of good characters (DJ) on that station. If we had somebody that knew how to train DJ's for commercial radio there would have been quite a few that would have "made it". I was an oddity in the later years of WUCI. I used to do WUCI on the weekdays. The Whale on the weekends. Then during the times that SUNY wasn't in session (Christmas & Summer), I would get clearance and do a couple of shows on WHRW during the week.

Man so many good people on that station...Ashimba, Kinglsey, Al Wood, Ricky T & CA Meldog (Hip-Hop Explosion). Jose Mendez, Jose Ace, (The late) DJ Rum, Brenda Critchlow, Doc Sly, Rupert, (Also, one of the best old-skool DJ's I have ever heard...Don Juan from Syracuse...Great Oldies show!!! I think he is still up there at Power 106 but I never to hear him when I am up there). There are some names I know I have forgotten, but you will never forgotten in my heart!!

Late Summer of 85- (I want to say June of 93 or 94) I have the answer at home Scappy and will post tonight with the correct year.

Funny thing about the day WUCI went off the air. On that day, I had taken off. When I had a chance to listen to the station on my way back home. I heard (<the late> Tim Edwards "DJ Rum" say "We are being taken off the air...I don't know when we will be back"). Called the station and he told me "The Police are here and taking everything away....talk to you later!!!"

Good day to take off huh?

Well first thing I need to do is get rid the "intern" name and use my real name, I'll work on that:)

When I was there, it was myself, Ricky T, Rum, Yvette, Al Wood, I eventually took over for Al Wood for mornings, Reese, Brenda, Mike Taylor, Kingsley. I had a blast doing it! As a matter of fact I believe it was May 29. My birthday is May 30, and I was "prepping" for a great show...Still prepping, lol..

Thanks to all for the insights. Sounds like it was a fun station to be a part of. Now I'm curious about how the station was funded. Was it listener supported or was it mainly supported by underwriting?
Also, when they did sign off for good, how long was it before WSKG applied for the freq. to launch WSQX? What surprises me is that 'SKG didn't just buy the station when it was going dark. It probably would have made it alot easier to launch the jazz/news service, and could have been put on the air much earlier.

Re: 91.5 FM in Binghamton (and 90.1, too)

If I'm not mistaken, when WUCI went off WSKG already had an application pending for the station that would become WSQX - but the initial WSQX CP was granted for 90.1, not 91.5.

The 91.5 CP, when it was reissued, went to Randall Terry and his gang for what would become WJIK.

Somewhere along the way, the stations agreed to swap proposed facilities, putting WSQX on 91.5 from the tower near BOCES (hmmm, if WUCI could operate from the Stainless tower on Ingraham Hill, why not WSQX?) and WJIK on 90.1 from way out in Windsor where it doesn't really reach Binghamton.

Both CPs were granted in April 1993, and it looks like the frequency swaps were accomplished by way of mod-of-CP apps in Dec. 1994. WJIK applied for its license to cover Oct. 10, 1995; WSQX in July 1995.

I remember visiting WUCI in probably 1987 or so; they were on Hawley Street and were the only Binghamton radio station willing to let a teenage radio geek visiting from Rochester come in for a tour unannounced. (At least I got to see the lobbies of WNBF/WQYT in the Security Mutual Building and WKOP/WAAL on State Street!)

Yeah, I remember just before my big show birthday bash. That sucked. Oh well.
What ever happened to Yvette, Mike Taylor. We should have a reunion.

Since WMXW was already on the air by 1992, I wonder how the WUCI phone ended up in the WMXW transmitter building. Was WUCI really on the stainless tower? Who handled engineering for WUCI? Somewhere I have some recordings of WUCI - maybe one of these days I'll come across them and post them. I recall one tape has a remix of "Full Circle" by Company B starting out on 33 1/3 instead of 45. Darn those 12" singles pressed at 45 rpm...

I started out mobile DJ'ing in 1989, and used to tape remixed off of WUCI to play at dances when I didn't have the 12" single yet. At that time, the best selection of remixes was a record shop in Ithaca or Sam Goody in Elmira, and I could only get there when my parents could drive me.

If I recall correctly, weren't illegal substances were involved?

IIRC WMXW built that building on the Stainless property, I wonder if a former engineer may have installed it there...

Interesting that this facility was originally located there; There must be some reason why WSKG didn't colocate. ($$?)

I can say that it wasn't pretty. Nothing against Ashimba personally, he gave me my start. But the way sh** went down at UCI wasn't pretty. I'll let someone else elaborate. I personally miss the station. Great people.

That's funny! I was actually "suspended" for a period for playing too much "dance" music. For a lack of a better word. Some DJs remember that. I do like yesterday :)

That all predates me. At this moment, WMXW is the last radio station remaining on that tower. WSKG TV is also no longer on that tower, although they did leave their big RCA transmitter behind when they moved. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: more UCI 91.5-90.1 stuff

To all,

WUCI started out at the TV 40 tower, they couldn't afford the rent. I was at KGB when they got kicked off the tower by Stainless (they had a tower climber shut them off...hmm...late 89). They moved their antenna down to downtown Bing for a short while and then worked out a deal with Motorola to go on Ingraham there (where 101.7 and 104.5 are located). When they finally, sadly collapsed Dave martin of Arrowhead tried to save them with a split programming deal...they refused. The equipment was all sold at a sheriffs auction held in 1992; I was there and I bought the original on-air board (intended originally for 94-7 WPHD...now the met). It ended up being an extra and I sold it to WEMR in Tunkhannock. Ironically, I recently aquired this station (1460 AM) and got the board back!!!! Its in my closet (its a Rockwell-Collins, by the way). When it went dark both WSKG and Arrowhead applied for the 91.5 frequency (Randall Terry was not involved at all at this time). On one of my power drives through the southern tier I had a revelation....I called Dave Martin at Arrowhead and suggested it to him...he called WSKG....they liked the idea too. WSKG and Arrowhead asked the FCC to split the two applications....giving 90.1 to Arrowhead using the then KGB tower in West Windsor as the site (it just barely provides 60 dBu coverage of Bing from this site, the FCC required Binghamton to still be the city of license); of course we at KGB got a great tenant in Dave Martin. WSKG got 91.5 on their BOCES tower near Ely Park in Johnson City/Binghamton. I suggested that Dave Martin immediately build the 104.9 translator to use with 90.1; I did the FCC work and 104.9 in downtown Bing. went on shortly after 90.1 went on. I hung the 90.1 antenna with Dave martin's help (oh and some help from Dave Frost too). Me, the Dave's and Shawn Shark (Rock107 Prod Dir) hung the 104.9 antenna on the State office building a year before it opened to the public; its hooked to the airconditioner superstructure....yes I crawled out on a girder!!! (I was nuts!). WSQX (91.5) and WIFF (90.1) are still technically the same as they have always been. Well...to bed with me....still getting over a summer cold.
