91.5 "Freedom FM"

91.5 WHKC had been running music with an id ontop of the songs when they hadnt been airing preaching/teaching programming.

I tuned in today to hear dead air then checked them out later and it appears they have decided to load liners between music and also run two psa's at the bottom of each hour...

I am suprised there has not been any asking for listener support or underwiting spots on the station, it's been Christian for well over a year now... I can't imagine the tower rental and studio space is cheap unless the late Mr. Case's wife is running it out of their house or something.

Actually, they switched to their current format during the first week of September, 2007.

Also, Do they even have a phone # listed in the phone book? Where do they keep their public file for public inspection? Are they even required to keep a public inspection file being a non commercial radio station? If so, dose it need to be made accessible at their main studio location?

Wouldn't be surprised if this station was run out of someones house. That may be the reason they have yet to ask their listeners for support or underwriting spots. In this current economy, it seems odd they they have yet to
solicit donations from their listeners. Regardless "Freedom FM" seems like a very low-key radio station and they
apparently want to maintain a low profile.

It looks like its in that industrial park on Powell Rd. where WRFD's old tower used to be.

Interesting..

The only reason I went off the "running out of the home" Idea was their FCC license lists a residential address in Powell...

I could not remember the exact date to go Christian but I knew it was over a year ago after the passing of Mr. Case. They have seemed to clean up the automation though inserting liners between songs now...

Yes non-coms have to keep a public inspection file. I did IT work/Volenteer on air/MD work for a small rural FM a few years back and we had a public file that was accessable during 'normal business hours' even though they had a 'staff' of just two people.

Artie- you are correct. It WAS running from a house that made for a very limited ability to make programming changes.
That was until the cutover to their brand new studio facilities. The cutover occurred between 3 and 4 PM Sunday.

Now Holly Casagrande can now fully program the station as she sees fit. I would expect to hear some fine tuning in the future.

Here is a link to a couple of studio photos- http://www.wloh.net/contractengineering.html

Mark,

Ahhh that's why when i was listening sunday the 'loop' of songs they sometimes use to fill between the ministeries cut out and then they had silence for about an hour.... Thanks for filling in that 'missing piece'

I kinda thought it was running from someones house 1) the FCC license address and 2) some weekends the STL would stutter like a comrex having bitrate issues. 3) when the teaching was not on the music was almost as if it was a loop, you'd hear the same sequence of songs then it would cut out and go to another song... also when not in teaching mode the legal id 'ran' ontop of the songs near 30: and 00:

Glad to see Holly is finally able to get it off the ground! It's a very nice 'local' station.

I see she's got a DAD Pro automation system there.. That will sure help the station sound more professional. I had wondered at times if the station has been running off an old audisc system or something because it sounded very basic in programming.

Anyone know WHKC's URL? I've googled it and find nothing. Also, www.915fm.org shows nothing.

I don't think they currently have a web presence. The old 91.5 url was what the late Mr. Case has started to build when they preped the launch for the Christian talk format but after his passing that site never seemed to get off the ground then faded late last year.

I would think once Holly gets the programming tuned she'd get some form of web presence. At least an 'online' program guide would be a start as they run various ministries/talk programs during the weekdays and weekends but there is no schedule posted anywhere to know what airs when (unless you happen to find the time of various shows on the seperate ministries websites).

Any idea on what their URL is now? Can't seem to find anything online about them now....

nice to know there's "no connection between ministry and militia," as the website you posted for this station points out. Would hate to think all that venom about "them there evil liberal folks" from the unaminously right wing religious stations would expect anyone to take them seriously. Heavens, who would expect them to act on all the fear and bitterness they're stirrin' up? Can't see how they can keep pretending to be a nonprofit and still be so partisan for one extremist end of one firebreathing political party. Or call out the gun-armed whackos and point out that they represent about the furthest thing from the gospel of Jesus as there is.

Why isn't there room on the dial for some other religious groups that don't represent these simplistic "god'ncountry" opinions, and the formats that dish them up from a dozen or more places on the radio dial. Even Columbus is cooler than that, and deserves better variety on the air. Guess the business of American-style religion on the radio is kinda like a corporate monopoly, ain't it?

"Evil liberal folks" is passe.  Now it's "evil socialists."  The one good thing I can say about Columbus radio is that we don't (yet) have any stations that call themselves "The Truth" or "The Patriot" or "Rush Radio."  At least I hope not.  The name "Freedom 91.5" is obnoxious enough.  91.5 is a bad joke that will never get any ratings, and this is one case where it's not because of the signal.

Nu Roo, PLEASE don't give the right-wing stations in Columbus any ideas with the Rush Radio. ;D

The "freedom" in "Freedom FM" speaks of a spiritual freedom.

"So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed." --John 8:36 (NIV)

OK, but then shouldn't the website have Jesus or some other Christian imagery in back of the name instead of an unfurled American flag? That suggests that "Freedom" is being referenced in a different sense. Website graphics adjoining a station name generally try to sum up what the station is all about -- artists they play, personalities, Columbus skyline, an electric guitar, etc. It's nice to have a flag on any site, but the placement here is misleading if the "Freedom" isn't supposed to have a political or patriotic meaning.

I agree with Nu_Roo_2.

Just from the description of the web site and the name it sounds as if it's Political talk station, or maybe a Tea Party station.

I can't speak definitively for the ownership/management....but it would sure seem to me that if it were a political thing, they wouldn't be using liners with the Scripture verse I posted earlier. It would stand to reason that they would also have some talkers other than Dobson who were more overtly political.

Perhaps they're playing on both the spiritual and national sides of freedom? They don't have to be a political talk or "TEA Party station" to love the freedoms this country still offers for the time being. ;-)

I can't speak for WHKC but I am willing to bet that the Freedom they are talking about is the freedom in a relationship with Jesus Christ. There is no hidden agenda there.. If the station was out to be a "right wing" talk station they would be running syndicated talkers all day and night like other parts of the dial do.

And give WHKC some credit.. while its automated its programmed locally and owned by local people .. They coulda sold out to EMF or another big name relgious outfit by now and went to the bank. I have a lot of respect for Rob's wife keeping the station going after his passing and not taking a quick exit.
