91.7 KXOT....Testing??

The 91.5 translator in Oly is a pain in the ass. K218CU Delphi (Capitol Peak) belongs to IGLESIA PENTECOSTAL VISPERIA DEL FIN. They have an office in Seattle and a station or two in the area.

When they first put their newly acquired translator back on the air a year ago, they were running WAAAAAAAY beyond their legal power. Sounded great in Olympia and Lacey as well as west in Montesano. It was blasting over cochannel KGHI, the Westport classical station, in the east part of their coverage area.

A few complaints from different parties got them to back the power level down to something closer to their licensed 3 Watts. Even at 2500 feet, 3 Watts is more of a cigarette lighter than a flamethrower. Their protected coverage contour doesn't even make it halfway to Oly. But it can be heard on car radios in town.

They paid $90,000 for this channel, yet they can't seem to keep the audio feed working for very long before it bails out. They already got a ticket from Officer FCC for running the transmitter for weeks with no station ID.

I'm far from being a stickler for FCC rules, but these guys are like a drunk at the wheel of a school bus in regard to their consideration for neighboring signals.

They're already up against the protected contour of the upgraded KXOT protected contour across Oly, so they can't even bump it up to 4 Watts.

It's a bad dog that should be put to sleep.

But then, there are a few more of those puppies out there.

KPLU still has their 105.5 translator still on in Mount Vernon. Even though KPLK is louder and clearer in most of the area. They need to get rid of that.

CSN bumped their main religious format down to 88.3 in Mount Vernon and bumped "The Effect" Christian alternative format off completely when they shut down 89.1 after KPLK 88.9 went on. I hope they have the good sense not to relaunch it on another terrestrial FM frequency down there - it won't last. And when CBU-2-FM goes 97,000 watts, that will be all she wrote for 88.3 as well. The KPLU 105.5 Mount Vernon translator is barely detectable next to CBC Radio 2 on 105.7 and it's gonna be a LOT worse for CSN on 88.3 with their wattage and tower height when CBC Radio One goes full blast, likely this year. And I don't think CSN can boost up in any configuration on that frequency.

I'm afraid CSN is completely finished in the Bellingham/Mt. Vernon area. Too many stations in the lower part of the band nowadays.

CSN still has their god-lator on Gold Mountain, on 89.1 (K206DM). Only running up there at 11 watts.

Unlike the earlier test, since I had some advance notice on this (thanks notalent), I've been able to make antenna adjustments during the broadcast.
I don't know if the power level is the same, but I can maximize reception with less multipath here in northeast Seattle than I previously had with KXOT.
That's the good news for KXOT. The positive aspect for me as a DXer is that although I can't null it out completely, I can attenuate the signal enough so that I could get some skip during a good opening.
So, at least for me, an improved signal when I want to hear KXOT, and decent nulling 2when I want to hear DX.
If this is a full-power test, it's better on both counts than I could have hoped for.

Heard it at 18:35 doing their TVW simo while driving around, also tuning the 3 watt legal/illegal monster on 91.5. I would rather have FRO back on the air than a giveaway LP that abuses their license.

I sure wish the FCC would shut down whoever's playing religious music on 88.9 in downtown Edmonds. No talking on it, just a certain style of "worship" music. Probably just tracking CDs. I think it's coming from a fundamentalist church across the street from the police station. Seems to be on when they're having services, which is on days and times the other local churches aren't. It covers up Espace Musique in the "bowl" area of town, which is a high powered licensed station which otherwise has a strong signal into Edmonds from Victoria. I do hope all Canadian freqs are not now considered "fair game" on this side of the border. That would count as a violation of the Free Trade agreement, among other long held treaties, no?

Any one have contact info for the FCC in Kirkland to report such a violator? I don't see any numbers or email addresses listed for the FCC's local office.

The address from a letter I received awhile ago.
And I've been part15 ever since. (2yrs+) mostly!

Jesus, what a dick whomever it was when I called that number in Kirkland to complain about 91.5. First off, he picks up the phone with an unintelligible non hello or business identifier like I'm calling a drug house. I had to ask if this was the FCC, then he wanted my name, address, phone and I said no. He acted like he couldn't do anything and I said Dee Cee wouldn't be this cold about answering the phone. He said "I'm just enforcement" and I said does that include dead carriers for commercial stations and he said , "uh yeah, what is it?" So I told him the details but won't bother to call again.

Hate to break the current conversation, but 91.7 is back on the air right now, at 3pm!

They even have an ID at the top of the hour... "91-7 KXOT, broadcasting with test audio from TVW", and giving out the web address to them, as well as the e-mail address to Public Radio Capital, for comments.

Would be interesting if TVW bought KXOT AND brought the KTVW call letters back to Tacoma (I last heard the KTVW call sign is at a TV station in Arizona, so KTVW-FM is available.....)

I heard them from my home in Renton this early morning just after midnight with the aforementioned I.D., and again in the car in Issaquah/Sammamish this afternoon between 3-5. TVW audio with extended hearings about the proposed coal trains to be routed through the Puget Sound area.

I liked the old KXOT. Any rumors about what the new format might be?

Heard KXOT a couple of hours ago, fairly, in Monroe. Lots of staticky parts (Lord Hill has to probably do with it).

That would be ironic in itself as well, since KXOT is on Ch. 13's tower, which those KTVW call letters used to belong to that station (albeit before 13 moved to Gold Mountain).

I was driving around Abbotsford today going across the dial and heard CSN programming on 89.1. There are two possibilities.

5 watt K206DL in Granite Falls (70 miles away)
11 watt K206DM in Bremerton (105 miles away)

I'm kind of leaning towards Granite Falls as several other low power translators from nearby Mt. Vernon have been heard up here in the past. Can anyone confirm if Granite Falls is still on the air? The CSN website shows it as still being active.

I hear CSN on 89.1 in Monroe, 100% sure it's the Granite Falls station. I also heard it 24/7 at my old house near Thrasher's Corner in Bothell, but Radio U Issaquah also popped up as well. Never got KMHD there - took me a trip up to Bridal Trails (500 feet) State Park to receive KMHD for a new Tropo log.

Coming in even better earlier today while walking a few blocks away from the Monroe Library. CSN (K220HD) still comes in on 91.9.

Thanks for the info Crainbebo. I'm going to log it as a "tentative" Granite Falls. Will have to try for K220HD 91.9 in Fall City as well. All I've been able to hear so far on 91.9 is KPTZ in Port Townsend.
