91.7 kxt - FINALLY!

They are mixing in better music IMO...

10,000 Maniacs, Counting Crows, Kings of Leon, U2, Big Audio Dynamite, Smash Mouth, Moby... maybe it just sounds different to me because I have not listened in a while but it seems more "listenable" and not as obscure. Willing to give it another chance? Anyone else??

Definitely looking better.....hopefully this will result in more listeners. I am all for breaking new artists, but it should be mixed in with established quality music. Obscure stuff does not work when it makes up the majority of a playlist.

What's the deal with the Lemonheads and Mrs. Robinson -- is it in a re-release?

I heard the song twice today on 102.1 and once more on a different station online, and now I see KXT played it today. That song came out in late 1992 and that was pretty much the last time I'd heard it before now.

I got a copy of the song from Amazon. Its from the "Its A Shame About Ray" album. I think it was re-released as a remaster(?). I believe the song and video was first released for the 25th Anniversary of The Graduate as I recall.

If you look at the top songs they play - many are very good, and worthy of hearing (at least) once. Some of their top songs played that stand out are:

4 Robert Plant - You Can't Buy My Love

5 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - I Should Have Known It

9 Kings Of Leon - Radioactive

10 Old 97's - Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)

14 Train - If It's Love

15 Florence & The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

19 Cake - Sick Of You

8 Robert Randolph & The Family Band - If I Had My Way

Speaking of 102.1, I've noticed they are mixing in more new releases -- two or three an hour -- and playing more current tracks like Neon Trees and Muse. Feeling the heat maybe?

It's songs like these that will keep me listening...

I reckon it's good to see KXT getting some positive words from former "haters". I stopped listening to KXT months ago. I prefer fresh new music. KXT plays a lot of deep cuts and older material these days IMO. I'm enjoying KTCU 88.7 these days.

I don't think a music director would mess it up.
I'd love to see them hire a musicologist, someone who knows the history and the musicians, someone like KZEP-San Antonio's Tom Scheppke, or Jody Denberg from Austin's KGSR, or maybe KUT's Larry Monroe, or Kevin Connor from the Austin Music Television channel.
I think it would be great to hear musically significant tunes, and have the announcers be able to tell why its significant.
There's a lot of great local and regional talent that should, and could, be heard, if someone is in place to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Well, since Monroe left KUT in a huff not too long ago, he is available.

However, he may be too much of a purist for what KXT wants, since part of the current hassle at KUT is over the station being too mainline AAA and not being "authentic Texas," whatever that is.

KUT was #1 in the market 12+ in the December book, FWIW.

From the perspective of a ratings watcher: That's more like to be because of the NPR drive time news shows than music programming. (And KUT has been up near the top in the diaries where non-coms were not included before PPM, or so I understand.)

From the perspective of the Save KUT crowd: Public radio should never look at ratings and the PPM (which they say stands for "Purple People Meter") is flawed and not accurate in the first place. (Of course, they'll stop bashing ratings if it supports their motives to keep the station firmly in the slacker 70s.)
