91.7 WSGE's Signal

Has anyone else noticed a signal issue with WSGE, 91.7 recently? It seems over the past week or so, it is more difficult receiving their signal static free in northern Mecklenburg County down into Charlotte. They have never been strong in the Meck Cty area, but it seems to have worsened lately. Any ideas on if they are working on their transmitter, etc?

Possible interference from 91.9?

Speaking of which, I can barely lessen to WNCW on 100.3 due to interference from WVBZ. I blame Clear Channel.

(Yes, I know Radio One and the FCC are to blame, but it's more fun saying CC since they own WVBZ).

WSGE is operating temporarily on their auxiliary site on the campus grounds, thus the reduction in coverage. Should be back to full steam in a matter of days.

How well does WNCW's main signal get into Charlotte on 88.7? I know this is a bit off topic--for this thread--but there are overall just too many translators splattered around...IMHO.

I probably should start another thread.

Really 88.7's signal is about the same as 100.3. When the translator was at 100.7, It came in crystal clear.

Has 91.9 WRCM built on their CP yet to go to 50kw DA? Anyone know?
I have never had any trouble with WRCM whatsoever. I'm not that close, but it has a premium-quality signal.

And lousy music.

They should sound good. A few years ago they added on to the building and installed brand new digital consoles for both on air and production.

Careful God will get you for that comment about the music ;D

That station has sounded good signalwise since the very beginning, actually. For me, at least.

WYFQ plays the music I like.

The location of WNCW's tower on Clayman's (?) Peak in Yancey county might be the problem. When it gets real cold (as it's been lately), the signal get weakened. That affects the translator when it's trying to pick it up. This seems to happen every year.

Who cares if you can't hear WNCW on 100.3?

WVBZ-100.3/The Buzzard is one of the greatest rock stations on the planet!

Really, the FCC should not have assigned WNCW to 100.3 in Charlotte. 100.5 would have probably been better. They were on 100.7, but when 100.9 changed their COL from Albemarle to Indian Trail, 100.7 had to go.

That would be Clingman's Peak, which is the top of Mount Mitchell. That is the point east of the Mississippi, actually east of the Rockies. An excellent place for an FM transmitter, if you install proper deicing and radomes on the antenna bays. Without that protection, you will have to ramp power back when ice forms on the bays, or they will be damaged, and the transmitter may suffer damage too.

That said, I don't know what WNCW has installed for thier system, I have not been to that site in a number of years. I do know that WMIT which also has transmitting facilities there has the best FM signal in the eastern US, but they have plenty of cash to have a good installation. WNCW may not have that kind of cash and may not have deicers or radomes.

Clingman's Peak is near Mt. Mitchell, but it is not Mt. Mitchell. Actually, this site describes it as a "subpeak".

Scroll down until you see the photo at the bottom of the page, but don't scroll down to see the photo (unless you want to).

Also, if you are saying "highest point east of the Mississippi", that is true. East of The Rockies, no, unless you count South Dakota's Black Hills as part of The Rockies.

Well guys, I have the low-down on WSGE's main transmitter signal. Had a problem with the power amp modules and are in the shop for repair. The main transmitter site will be back ASAP. We took on a small amount of ice on the antenna a few weeks ago and the transmitter did not like it. That's solid state for ya. Thanks Mr. Hattaway for the post....

Will be glad to have WSGE back at full strength. WSGE and WNCW are the only places to hear new music in regular rotation.

Hey guys, I take care of WMIT-FM/HD and it is an exceptional site. WNCW has good equipment. Their antenna has proper protection from the elements. They are below my 6-bay backup antenna. Also, with tower height these are the tallest east of the Mississippi. In Charlotte you are approx. 120 miles line of site.

I was able to pick up WSGE at the Rowan/Davidson County line tonight. Unfortunately, when I got home I couldn't pick it up b/c of 91.9.
