91.9 / 92.5 Applications in Austin

First 91.9 (KLLR) is "surrendering" its current construction permit and applying to move further west, keeping Dripping Springs as the community of license.

Simultaneously, 92.5 (KVLR), which just moved in from Manor to Sunset Valley using one of the West Lake towers is applying to move the antenna to a location southeast of the airport, while jumping from a Class A at 2.8 kW to a Class C3 at 23 kW. It will stay licensed to Sunset Valley.

I saw that KVLR application earlier and I don't get it. We know they're boxed in to the north with Killeen and to the southwest by a San Antonio rimshot, but why do they want to move to the southeast side of town? Sure they'll have considerably more power (albeit with lower height), but the only areas they'll add to the coverage are places like Lockhart, Bastrop and Kyle.

"Southeast of the airport" puts it "near" the Circuit of the Americas. Maybe they're lookin' for the folks stuck in traffic to and from there. Oh, and while they're at the venue they could use a crystal radio so they won't even need a battery.

Yes, I saw that, and it's on an existing tower on Elroy Road. Sorry, but I look at this as a questionable move since they'd be actually losing signal strength toward the west, adding minimal coverage to the north and covering a large area of sparsely populated territory to the southeast of Austin. Sometimes a step up in class is worth little more than bragging rights.

I don't think EMF is very concerned with "bragging rights".The application and amendments were filed by EMF's in-house engineering department which is anything but amateur. They are very competent and I am sure all the options were considered.

Considering 91.9, 92.1, 92.5 and 106.3 are a simulcast, this is an overall improvement if the goal is covering the most of the five county metro with K-Love. Also, the folks in 78704 are not necessarily as interested in what EMF has to offer as the families in Bastrop and Kyle. The real coverage loss though looks to be out west around Bee Cave and Lakeway.
