91.9 PIRATE IN POTTSTOWN

Anyone else listen to the pirate on 91.9 around the Pottstown area? I've heard everything from KHJ/Los Angeles airchecks to what sounds like Music Choice TV audio at night. They're getting out atleast 8-10 miles over the hilly terrain. The nearest (legal) 91.9's are 40-60 miles away.

Maybe someone was driving near you with an XM/Sirius FM transmitter

That'd be a remarkable coincidence since I've heard it month after month for miles and miles around Pottstown.

Maybe someone is following me........... around the clock.............

I noticed them, around 2-3 weeks ago, relaying some progressive, almost NPR-ish sounding talk show. There has been a pirate on 91.9 from Pottstown for years.

Yeah......they have been on for well over 10 years (from what I noticed).....I even heard replays of WIFI 92 from their I 92 days. I wonder how this person(s) manage to get hours and hours of tape of all of this stuff.....some of it is great to listen to just to hear how radio use to be back in the day.....especially the earlier stuff from the AM stations.

Actually
The Closest licensed 91.9 station without doing a database lookup
would Be WBGD 91.9 Brick,Newjersey at Brick Highschool. 78 miles from Pottstown,PA

had to believe there's still enough dead space that close to philly for a pirate. good to know, and god bless all the pirates and their fine, fine work. keep it up, mateys!

Actually, it would be W22OAA in Parlin, NJ-line-of-sight.

Now that I have checked my database.
We were talking about the closest NJ Licensed "Station " would be WBGD in Brick.
Licensed transmitter aka translator would be my W220AA in Parlin at 69 miles from Pottstown.
You are somewhat Correct.
Only because the FCC does not put translators in the same catagory as Stations or LPFMs
and thats NJ stations
there is a translator w220BX in MARIETTA,PA its only 49 miiles from pottstown
the closest STATION is WYTL in WYOMISSING,PA at 18 mles

No surprise it's been on 10 years without being busted. There's pirates that have been on longer with more than twice the range that haven't been busted.

WYTL is 91.7 not 91.9

You are Correct about WYTL but they have an application Pending to move to 91.9

Actually, Philly has been a hotbed for pirate activity for quite some time now. Some "calls/logos" that come to mind immediately are WZXI, WPRT(?), 98.5 The Boss, El Zol, "Da Skore", amongst others.

Look a little closer at that WYTL spec sheet. I saw the coverage, and thought, no way 10 watts is covering to fringe Tamaqua! It's not.

It's not Circular Polarized, as is today's FM standard. It's using an old technique common in the 1940's-70's, and perfectly legal.

The station is 10 watts horizontal erp (for rooftop antennas), and 320 watts vertical erp (for car antennas). It's also at 800+ HAAT.

W2200AA's been off the air for quite some time. For the 3-5 mi. it did cover when on the air, it's still quite weak.
