91.9 WNTI sold to Philadelphia's WXPN

91.9 WNTI in Hackettstown, NJ, which for years was owned by Centenary College and ran a Triple A rock format, has been sold to University of Pennsylvania station 88.5 WXPN for $1.25 million. The WNTI DJs were abruptly locked out of the studio on October 5th with no advance warning of the station's demise. WNTI continued playing automated music and PSAs until noon today (October 15th) when they began simulasting WXPN.

Centenary says they will continue to run WNTI as an online-only station. Their stated reason for selling the FM station was to "reinvest the proceeds from the license sale in building Centenary's academic offerings, to support student recruitment and retention, and fuel Centenary's role as an economic engine in Warren County, New Jersey" -- in other words, because they needed the money.

Seems like a smart move to me. If they can monetize the FM license, yet retain an online presence for students and volunteers, it's a win-win. The medium of transmission is not as relevant as it once was. Why tie up college assets in a broadcast license?

They need the money, and college students' interest in radio has been declining for a long time. Doesn't make much sense to invest the money it takes to run a radio station, even a non-comm, when you don't have enough students to support the program.
