910 Spartanburg

unrealistic, but they should re-create the old famous 91 and put it back on the air. Fun, local radio. Has to be better than what they're doing now.

New transmitter.......Just in time for Cinco de mayo! Gringo

Offer Davidson enough money and they'll probably let you do it. haha.

I may be off a little, but aren't 910's towers near I-85? I remember years ago seeing towers with the call letters in neon hanging off the tower array off of I-85 in Spartanburg. Please set me straight

They were there until the very late 80s. They are now off 176, way down behind the North Spartanburg Bapt. Church. Just out from "John Dodd Hill". Going North after you pass the Church, look out to your right.

TheStoker's correct. The three sticks were behind the studios just off Hearon Circle.
Back in the 60's (just after the Earth cooled and I started in radio) the station turned off the W on the tower lights as part of a contest/promotion to find the station's "missing W." Turned out the missing W was located by combining the two V's from the Travelodge Motel on East Main Street.

Miss the ol' WORD! Complete travesty they tore that site down and rolled in townhomes and a Bi-Lo. They lost some signal coverage even for day pattern with the lower wattage when they moved it to JD Hill. I can still quite vividly remember first entering the 'ORD studios (first radio station I ever got to tour prior to being sucked in). Very cool, that stale smoke smell, hideous (but era appropriate) carpet, Bobby Dean phoning in the latest traffic snafu and Carl "The Janitor" was even on the air then. Good times. It was great to have since worked with a lot of those folks like CJ, Bob Morgan and such. Having Bob do afternoons late in his career on Lite FM was a complete hoot.

Hey "THOM". I worked there in the mid to late 70s, right after Steve McCoy left. Great memories. That missing W contest was great. Just simple an effective. I know we have talked about WORD on here so many times, but it is still great. Morgan, Bob Canada, Bill Christie, and on and on. I use to stay in contact with CJ, but not in the last few years. Super memories. Remember the 'red phone'? I never heard it ring. Haha.

Back in the 70s, WORD/910 had a pretty good signal. I used to pick it up way down in Chesterfield CO. daytime (nothing at night), about 120 miles from Spartanburg, even with the terrible ground conductivity in the area. As I remember, WORD had a decent top 40 sound at that time...

Just last week I found some WORD memorabilia in a garage clean up and starting scanning things. I put them on one of my web sites at http://nowherenet.org/cj/word/ Then I ran across this thread at 1am, thought I'd share with you guys. Feel free to copy any images you want to. If there's any interest, I'll see what all I can find, 'cause I also found some airchecks on reel to reel at the same time, gotta get a machine out of mothballs at work and dump them to hard drive. Guess someone remembered the "Carl the Janitor" thing on KISS-FM for a few months *grin*. I remember getting daytime calls from Newberry and even Columbia and over towards Shelby occasionally in the 70's before things got noisy on the AM band. At one point we were thinking of a 4th tower to get rid of that bit of a null towards Greenville in the day. I um .. used to move the nighttime null a bit that went through Westgate mall during Spartan High/Dorman games at Dorman so they had air monitor at the field. ;D

I found a picture taken the day we cut the WORD towers down. I posted it this afternoon at the same place. :)
