91FM KOKF C-CHR flips to Air1

bueller said:
Absolute nonsense and defense of the status quo.

Would you care to address my point about how broadcasters like EMF have driven up entry costs and taken frequencies? I imagine not, because you can't defend their tactics and see any reasonable way for the independents to compete against them.

As for Clear Channel, the fact you defend a company that has raped radio speaks volumes. You can't defend the pillaging of a youth ministry in OKC for a satellite delivered, non local, generic product targeted at a totally different audience. That frequency was completely done wrong at the hands of EMF. No excuses.

Please show me where I posted nonsense.

I addressed the concept of competition. That ought to cover the defense you are after.

It does speak volumes. What you hear in it is up to your ears, but I stand behind the post.

Again, you call it pillaging. You think the frequency was done wrong. But you are blaming the wrong people. If you think it was wrong for that format to switch, take it up with the sellers...not the buyers.

So again, the posts are bias as well.

You did not address the issue of how someone can simply "start their own station" against these people. It is not a matter of opinion that KOKF was pillaged. A local, youth ministry format was removed for generic, satellite driven programming originating from California.

Does the public service aspect of the license mean anything to you? Do you honestly consider it an improvement for the actual listeners of OKC to have this happen to their radio station?

Did EMF conduct research or consider keeping the format? Did they talk to the listeners? No, they came in, laid down the cash, and took 91FM off. How humble and accountable of them to not even ask Oklahoma City what they wanted.

Doing some research, EMF also did this to a very diverse eclectic AAA station in Central Missouri and a college station in Kansas. Also to a dance station in Toledo. Typical of the secular operators, they come in with no concern for the existing audience and turn the station into a repeater with no local content.

If I want satellite radio, I'll get XM.

And if you're under 25 or not a white female, EMF doesn't give a damn about you, your tastes, or your needs. They're a business. Not a ministry.

Again, and I'm not sure why it is so hard to grasp this... It is not EMF's responsibility to keep a format. If you are unhappy because of a format switch, take it up with the station that sold. They are responsible. If they had sold to anyone else, it would still be their responsibility it is gone. Because they are the ones who decided to pull that programming off the air the minute it went on the market.

And..a person under 25 is not the target demo of AC radio, and EMF's KLOVE is AC radio.

Are you suggesting that businesses and ministries are opposite each other? Don't you think ministries ought to operate with some basic business practices? It is a foolish notion to seperate them. You simply cannot just wish for the way you want things to be, you must put things into action...and business does that.

The public service license was already addressed in my previous post. EMF is only responsible to the FCC and their own company vision statement. Now, if you do have specific examples of how EMF is not meeting these responsibilities, that is what ought to be discussed, but not continued pass the buck and blame because you just don't happen to like the format they broadcast and the fact that their understanding and mission for ministry is different than yours.

And in regards to satellite...might I suggest Sirius.

I have to laugh at any listeners who are foolish enough to send donations to EMF when they plead poverty after buying up commercial FM's for millions in Ohio/Kentucky, etc. and turning them into big fat satellators. (Again pleading poverty to get main studio waivers...) Not to mention tens of thousands of dollars in LMA payments to keep Vern Baldwin in business.

Elizabeth, if you honestly think it's great ministry and practice to come in and flip a format with no research or getting to know the community and audience, and providing zero local content, then you fail to understand the concept of operating in the public interest and think as long as someone can afford a license it's theirs to do as they please.

I really don't think you read any of my posts.

ok ..i am a supporter of klove. and yes i am one of the foolish as stated on this forum. i send them money every month. not a lot. just enough that i can get the streaming access code for air 1. in the town that i live klove bought out a local station. some may have been upset over it. but most people i know are happy about it because klove has better music and no teaching!! and did i mention the former owner was once my employer? the behind the scenes of that station was so bad i couldnt even listen to the frequency until klove took it over. klove and emf are not the devil. and they are not a rock station but they are much hotter than the previous local format. if you are in radio you know what hotter means. i dont understand the need for local stations just to say you have a local station. emf does a good job at what they do. i am a 37 year old male metallica fan. i am not a female 27 years old with 2 kids and a minivan. and i like the direction they have taken. and in this town they air local announcements as well as some local ministry minutes..so it is allowed and may well be happening iin okc also.

I'm not a supporter or non-supporter of K-Love, but they are the only Contemporary Christian outlet among several Christian-formatted stations, the major ones which have been on the air since the 1960s. We ahve three 50kW FMs, all by and large carrying all the same shows (Dobson, Swindoll, McCarthur, Evans, etc.). One of them stops for their daily right-wing conspiracy fix ("Point of View"). In all that time, none of them even would have thought of a music-intensive format. Maybe it does take the economy of scale of a K-Love to make it happen. I don't like their business practices, especially (we're poor, we're about to go bankrupt unless you take them greens from them jeans) and no local content at all, but none of the locals ever did this format. And Elizabeth is right...the old formats died the minute those signals wee put up for sale. Not much different than 97X in Oxford OH..many listeners accused the couple gthat owned the station of "selling out". When the choice was taking the money (many times what they paid)and being able to enjoy life, take care of aging parents, etc. and "being loyal to the music" the choice was doing what was righgt for them as people. If there are those who want government control of formats..that's a different diecsussion.

i have never heard a non com not ask for money. wanna hear something that will make you sick..a shareathon on a commercial station! the station that was previously on the frequency here use to hold monthly shareathons and beg for money when they didnt need any! they were making money off the 20 minutes of commercials per hour! and those wacky preachers every night with their infomercials..i mean sermons ;D

At least KOKF's owners sold to a group that kept some sort of CHR CCM format. It could have definitely been worse. I'll admit that the best option would have been to find someone that could have kept the hotter format and kept it local. But if that couldn't happen at least they weren't sold to a group that would have changed the station to a format that would do nothing to reach younger listeners.

I'd agree that in an ownership change if listeners are abandoned that it's the previous owners that deserve the blame, not the new owners no matter how drastic the change might be. Along with that though I think that the previous owners have the responsibility to try to sell to someone who will keep the current format or something similar. I think that the previous owners of KOKF did better than a lot of CCM stations that sell to the highest bidder with no regard for their listeners, or are forced to sell and can't find a buyer that will keep a similar format and end up having to sell to someone who will change the station even if that's not what they wanted to happen.

Be thankful that KOKF wasn't sold to an anti-CCM group or someone who would have made it into a dollar a holler station. 8)

Has anyone hear actually listened to KOKF within the last few years? Thank you, Air 1.

Praise God that HIS message is still being broadcast in OKC through KOKF...at least it's not like that ONE station in Flordia....from CCM to sex radio.

Alright I had to throw in my two cents on this topic... sorry I'm late.

(Stepping up on my soapbox)

I lived in OKC and greatly appreciated the service that 91FM offered. I think the reason why people are sad to see it go and sad to see a K-Love Air One station come in is due to the vast difference in missions. 91FM was all about serving the local community and I think we all know that is not what EMF is about, I don't care what they say. EMF says that they just want to offer people a Christian radio station in their market... well why in the heck are they in the business of buying out decent local stations that have a good following to just replace it with satallite fed programming. I could respect that if that is what they said they actually did! I have a hard time to seeing them as a ministry since they are in the business of buying out ministries to promote their business.

if they cared so much about the community than why did they sell it?? as steve miller once said ...take the money and run..oh yea....hummmm

I don't disagree with them about making the decision that they did. I know that they had been struggling financially. My point was just to say that there's a huge difference in Air One and 91 FM's approach to community and why it is sad to see them leave.

I hope Air One does well though, some Christian radio is better than none!

While I feel that Air One's lack of localism could be its undoing, a lot of my friends (M/F 23-34) would rather have an improved Air1 signal here in "Louisville" than our two local stations. Maybe they spent that money in the wrong place . . .

Not to be argumentative here...just some observations.

Live and Local is definitely the best-case scenario. But frankly, I don't think lack of local content will undo EMF at all. They're doing just fine. In fact, they're floursihing.

The only thing that would 'undo' EMF would be if for some strange, unforseen reason ALL of their listener support went away.

And based on their track record...that's not happening.

I would agree with that Gary (good to see you're still apart of the Christian music scene). While I like for a station to be live and local, there are still some big advantages to be a network like EMF. They have access to talent that some of us would love to have. They have resources that most would blush at.

I don't see them having a downfall in the near future, but would still love to see them do more within the community since they have such a powerful reach.

But, when it comes down to it, we still look to them for certian industry cues. I've been able to learn a ton from listening to David speak at different seminars.

That's a rude comment! You have no clue how much personal money from the owners pocket was put in the station to keep it going.Very unfair comment!
Here's a better question. Why didn't the community support the station better? They wish they had now and I'm sure they were given hints that they had better! Now they're crying!

OK...not a big fan of EMF....BUT...you can't blame them for buying a station that wants to sell because it's struggling financially. Live & local is better, but again...thank God positive, Christian music is still in the OKC market. A radio station / group committed to playing Christian music in my book...IS a ministry.
