91FM KOKF C-CHR flips to Air1

I'm gonna have to agree with ol' Jackie Boy... KOKF and Air1 are like Kevin Max and Toby Mac... KOKF had their very very loyal listeners while Air1 has a lot more listeners that may not be quite as loyal but listen a lot... KOKF had A LOT of really great people up there but they would go on 4 or 5 minute rants about NOTHING in afternoon drive time, play very obscure artists, and "train wrecked" quite a bit... Air1 is pretty solid, and I'll agree with who ever said it earlier, Local is best case senario but good radio trumps local if it's not that great...

Well put!!!! ;)

Heaven forbid someone play something someone would call "obscure." Can't have a Christian station taking chances on new music young people might actually be listening to. Let them eat myspace. ;)

Hi all.

I grew up with KOKF. I started listening in 1989. The radio station was (and still is) very dear to me. During my teenage years, 91 FM planted a seed that led to me becoming a Christian. In college, I started working at 91 FM which led me into a radio career. One of my best friends was the final program director at 91 FM.

It saddens me to this day that 91 FM is not the same. A lot of my friends were displaced when Air 1 came to town.

HOWEVER, it really disappoints me to see the kind of venom I see on this board about EMF.

When it comes down to it, one owner didn't feel like he could operate the station anymore and sold it to another owner who kept similar music. Sure, they're not as adventurous as we were at 91 FM. There's no Alternative Edge or metal on Night Time 91. But before I left OKC for Kansas City this summer, I heard a good music mix, very good imaging (close to my heart) and I know they are making an impact.

EMF and 91 FM have similar goals. They choose different paths to get to their goals. I have no doubt that each is/was sincere in reaching people for Christ. People on this board have made hay about millions of dollars going to EMF. Do you have idea the amount of expenses involved just staying on the air on that many signals?

I have listened to K-Love for years and nothing about their fundraising bothers me. Share-A-Thon is the hardest part of the job in non-comm radio.

I'm starting to ramble here, but the bottom line is this. I would kill (maybe that's too strong :p) for a Christian Hot AC/CHR station in KC. I truly miss the music. Oklahoma City has it because EMF bought KOKF.

Joel,

No one could have said it better than someone who actually has a clue.

-Good thoughts.

True... We all miss the localism we had with many of these now networked stations, but I remember we all saw this evolving many years ago... Costs, effectiveness, support and yes, the most difficult thing is fundraising... EMF has done a stellar job of giving many markets what they would not have without the K-Love's in AC and the Air-1's in CHR.... EMF and Way-FM's networks are the high water mark of network fed contemporary Christian radio.... I could never think of more likable guys than Dick Jenkins and Bob Augsburg... I really respect and treasure their friendships beyond our radio relationships.... "Skipper T."

I have always been a huge fan of KOKF 91 FM. Even though I never worked there, I was a very religious listener, and listened almost all day every day. I do miss 91 FM very much, and do wish that it was still on the air. 91 FM was one of the most creatively programed Christian radio stations. The Weekend Party Mix, Lifted Radio, Nitetime 91, and the local DJs I will truly miss.

While I would perfer 91 FM over air 1, I do not despise or hate air 1. 91 FM and Air 1 are two entirely different formats. They are both impacting lives. 91 FM was more of and alternative rocker, while Air 1 resembles a true CHR. I do enjoy them both. I know many of you do not like EMF, but do understand that if it was not for EMF, Christian Music would not be as widespread and popular as it is today. EMF is doing a good thing by going to markets where there is no Christian Music and putting on Air 1 or KLOVE. KOKF was going to sell no matter what. I am grateful that EMF bought it instead of NPR, or some other secular broadcaster. If EMF did not buy KOKF, then the only Christian music source Oklahoma City would have would be KLOVE and AC 104.1 KMGL, with the Sunday Morning Christian Music Show.
