91X Morning Show...is over

I'm actually more upset about this than I thought I'd be. Yeah, at the end of the day, they're just three people in a studio. Millions have come before them, millions will come after, but the crew of Mat Diablo, Carlos and Sammi had an originality to their antics that no other morning team here in SD does. Come on, who else would think to interview hobos in Ocean Beach about major world events? Who else would hold a weekly event where a listener, over the phone, takes hits off a bong while reading to the audience? Who else would not only condone drunk people calling into their show, but actually encourage them to do so and highlight the best calls they get? More importantly, who else could pull that crap off and make it funny?

Diablo and crew were on their way to becoming a lasting institution in San Diego, and here's hoping another station recognizes that and picks them up.

As for 91X, I doubt I'll be listening to the station much anymore. I suspect that this move was made based on the run-ins with the new management that Diablo alluded to from time to time. My greatest fear is that it was done to get Mikey Esparza onto a bigger station, or to clear a path for (shudder) Jeff & Jer to return.

Best of luck to you, Mat, Carlos and Sammi, wherever you may find yourselves next.

having callers call in while taking bong hits? groundbreaking

WHAT? When was the last show? Just as 91X was getting higher ratings they pull this move?

Yep, the idea of having a morning team doing wacky, crazy things was pretty cutting edge. And as far as being able to "condone drunk people calling into their show" that is quite a change from some past morning shows where the drunks hosted shows: I remember one local news director who was severely hung over during the morning show and needed constant hits of oxygen from the bottle hanging next to the first aid kit and who came back from lunch soused....he was a riot! Maybe the next 91X team could be stoned and do a bit where sober people call in.

Very good assessment, Matt & co. did have a good thing going and numbers/popularity to prove it. As for Mikey, he is definitely struggling over at 94.9. That audience is used to a more serious, educated morning show. Egomaniacs are something new to that audience and not well received.. Numbers will tell the tale. As for J&J, bite your tongue. Let's hope we have heard the last of them, at least on the radio. We've all seen how they are struggling to keep their name recognition in the community by attaching themeselves to any possible "cause" that can latch on to. This keeps their name in the news, if not the radio. As for Matt, Carlos and Sammi, best of luck to you in finding a new gig.

I'm not from the market but seeing as the overall station ratings were good and their cume is actually pretty high...this may have been simply a money move (or the contract could have been approaching its end)...it sucks to be out of work in radio right now so I wish them the best of luck

Since BCA doesn't really have any compatible morning shows to move over from another sister station will they go syndicated with the new morning show like 933 did after AJ moved to Star?

Let's not overhype it. The show was okay. Some mornings better than others. A lot of inside jokes that perhaps BCA worried would isolate some new listeners. They're putting more money in advertising for that station. There's a huge billboard off the 163 and Washington and the new "Live, Local, Independent Radio" moniker. Perhaps they want something new and fresh to distinguish it from its Finest City days.

There isn't a morning show anywhere that isn't under threat right now. PPM is showing that as soon as they start talking the listening goes away. Expect even more juke box than what you get now.

I just don't get it though. That morning show probably cost 1/20th of what it costs to produce The Mikey Show, I don't think money was an issue. The only person out of the bunch that would actually get paid was probably Mat Diablo! Preston dressed like he lived in a 3rd world country! The morning show fit their motto "Local. Independent. Radio." with their constant local references, especially to The High Dive. That morning show was unique, something you COULDN'T get anywhere else. Compare this morning show to the crap on The Mikey Show or AJ's Playhouse. You just can't compare. I'm sure Kevin and Bean are going to be moved over into mornings...

That's maybe what was meant by too many insider references: a beer and burger bar on Morena Blvd. is not all that relevant to most people in San Diego County, even 91X listeners: you can be too local.

What is up with 91x in the past few years???I know it was under different ownership but first cantore in the morning gone now diablo whats up with that why can't they play nice with people why!!!

Syndication will hurt them in the morning. Time will tell beachgoers ;D

LMA probably wants to make sure 91X doesn't suffer the same thing in their hands that it did at Finest City. Maybe the show wasn't sellable. I mean, their biggest advertiser was that bail bonds thing. "better to know me and not need me than to know me..."

Doesn't speak too highly.
