91X On The Cutting Edge Again?

B

Guest
I've just listened to the first three hours since the change and so far it has the feel of the 91X I once loved. I'm glad they're out from under Clear Channel's bootheels and under local ownership now. What's 94.9's next move?

Heh, yeah, since 94-9's the corporate b'tch now!
Pretty much takes the wind out of that strategy don't it?

Looks like this is alternative gone wild. A lot of rock and punk stuff I never
hear is being played...and that's a good thing.

This sounds closer to the anarchy of college radio than the
1983-86 era of 91X. Some bands I never heard of before are getting
played. A lot of the stale station bumpers have vanished.
There's humans talking more often than once or twice an hour.

Hopefully, they've dumped a lot of the soft rock crud that belongs
on My...oops...Star 94.1 instead of a rock station.

Officially, 91X is still under the Clear Channel cloud. However .... Dam(n) it is nice to hear the ole 91X again. It's a NOBLE idea that is really CLEAR to the listeners.<P ID="signature">______________

Could San Diego radio be NOBLE again?

And on that note, I wonder (out loud) if the people who own MIGHTY and the people who own 91X FM, might come together someday? Especially since it's many of the same people.

Not speculating, just wondering (out loud).
Anyone know if that is even possible?

Oh okay. Let's see CC is still doing sales for 91X and
housing the studios at their world domination HQ. Sounds
like another vintage Randy Michaels (former morning man
& CEO) "arms length" arrangement. KSDO had a similiar
arrangement several years back. Also, Stapleford has
been on the beach or outside the programming arena
for years, Halloran is still across the street.

Huh?

Uh...?

Okay...

You know what's funny, is this very
idea of the arms length theory came
from a very very high source in the
business, I'm simply passing it along.
Garrett, I don't care to argue with
you anyway, there should be more
connected individuals who are ready
to confirm or deny. You aren't
the guy. Go back to your MY and
STAR gossip.

I can also tell you from a very high level source that there will be no association with Finest City and Clear Channel other than sharing a building like two tenants. The stations will be competitors on all fronts. While they are really competing right now this will become more and more obvious after the final close of the deal and Finest City officially becoming associated with the stations.

The OLD 91X???? I thought, and I believe perception IS, that
91X is primarily 18-24 year old males?? A few people I know, in
their late-30's, are SO excited the old 91X is back...are they now
focusing on 25-54 year olds? True, they've taken a big hit the last
several years, but I think everybody knows that was due to BAD management.
Are other Alternatives around the country going to skew older as
a result? Will KROQ in L.A. now start playing more General Public and
Violent Femmes, and less Papa Roach, Korn, and Nine Inch Nails?
Maybe I missed something, but when did they change their target demo?

On the other side, will La Nueva flip back to Q106 and start playing Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, and Michael Jackson records because that's the way they used to sound and people miss the old sound...actually, that would be cool!

Somebody help me out here?

Most alternative stations in the country do not focus on 18-24 year old males. The format is very successful in reaching the 25-34 demo and even slghtly older. In addition there is a good balance between Men and Women much more so than active rock or even classic rock in many cases. By the way KROQ in LA is easily in the top 10 in the LA market in reaching Adults 25-54. That is primarily because of how strong they are 25-44.

Will they build a wall in the studios overnight to separate the stations, the way Beasley did in LA when they took over KHJ? [grin...]

From my understanding the entire building including these stations studios will be totally separate from any other studios.

As I mentioned I was repeating a question that
a broadcast executive very high in the food
chain pondered. I wish Finest City success.
I also believe 94/9 has done a hell of a job,
and it won't be easy to change the perception.
91X at it's best was along with KROQ the finest
example of Modern Rock radio. But that was a
long time ago. Those listeners are greying
at a rapid pace.

I dunno....KBZT seems to be slacking lately....what is with three Weezer songs in less then 30 min today between 2:45 and 3:15?

MD don't know how to work selector?
Or just an overrated programmer...
