92.1 FM Translator - Mid Cities (Irving?)

Someone mentioned a translator on 92.1. It is interfering with my reception of KTFW severly all the way to downtown fort worth. Does someone know who owns/operates this translator?

I have no idea who owns or is operating it, but I'd love to see it go away.

The Translator is outside both KTFW's and KXEZ's protected contours.
Not sure what the spacing requirements are for translators.

They say the owners are Penfold Communications. I've never heard of them.

Penfold owns KDKR 91.3 in Decatur. In Valley Ranch (North Irving), and in Las Colinas (near the 92.1 transmitter site on NW Highway), I receive a stronger signal on 91.3 than on 92.1.

The best way to get action is to email the impacted radio stations and complain if the translator is interfering with reception (of KTFW or KXEZ).

The "protected contour" rules are stupid. I use an outdoor antenna to for FM at home. That should be part of the criteria for protection. If you can put up an antenna and get a good signal, it should be protected...sheesh.

I understand, and that's by far the longest I've ever posted. There was a time when there was a way to display actual patterns and such within a post on this forum but that clearly got out of hand.

With this particular one I saw what you meant and thought it deserved a demonstration that what you see on one source doesn't always tell the whole story. The best example, of course, is Radio-Locator. It's easy to cite them as a source for patterns but it's important to remember that there's often much more to the story.

I think you're in the minority since most people (the "casual" listeners) won't take that step to receive distant stations. I hate to admit it but the rules actually make sense, even if the result is what has long been called the "AM-ization" of the FM band.

In the case of the Irving translator it actually fits the separation requirements with room to spare. Despite the rules, however, I don't see the need for it. And I agree with your point about complaints. If KTFW or KXEZ (or both) were to offer proof of a substantial number of listener complaints to the FCC the translator could be forced to find another frequency or go off the air. A similar thing happened recently in Austin; a translator on 105.3 had to go silent in the face of all the complaints and then applied for another frequency (96.3). Part of the story can be found at https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=101390452&qnum=5110&copynum=1&exhcnum=3

It can be done.

yes, and I didn't want to clutter the forum with a long URL. Apparently that's not accepted here :D

Never seen a pattern like that..for years FMs were supposed to be omnidirectional, with a few cheats allowed, like using the tower itself as a reflector that happened to direct a couple of dB more toward the nearest large city...or deliberate nulls for short spaced co-channels...

Hey Folks, the Translator on 92.1 is on a silent STA, has been since April.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but, what does silent STA mean ? It's still on the air.

That's not the case. Actually there were two STA's this year, both of which came and went. The first had to do with access to the transmitter site and the other was requested to give them time to re-position the antenna itself. The latter was to allow them to be off the air while the antenna was moved up the tower; that relocation was done at the request of the tower owner. The most recent request from K221FM is for a license to cover that change.
