92.1 WNGS, WRLX HISTORY

I cannot give you a specific date, but I remember the flip. 92.1 has a very interesting history. Their mid-90s format was Soft AC, similar to Easy 93.1 when it first signed on. If I remember correctly, as a Soft AC station, 92.1 did very well in the ratings. I am not sure why they eventually dropped the format. I believe they flipped to Jammin' Oldies sometime in 1999, and then became Alternative Planet Radio in 2000. As Planet, their playlist was very tight and very similar to the Buzz's. I remember flipping between Planet and the Buzz and often hearing the same songs. If I am not mistaken, Planet was dropped and became Soft AC "Classy 92.1" some time in 2003. I remember Skip Kelly being a jock on Classy.

92.1 came on the air as WWRN owned by the Resort Network, I don't remember the exact year but I believe it was the late '60's or early '70's. The station was purchased by Irving Pearl at some point. Mr Pearl made his money as the local owner of the Muzak franchise. All his Muzak trucks had the WNGS "Wings 92" logo on them.

Muzak in those days was a single channel service that was carried on an FM subcarrier. You needed special equipment to receive it. Mr Pearl thought he could put Muzak on the 92.1 subcarrier and not have to pay another station to carry the service. This didn't work out because 92.1 only had 3,000 watts on a 300 foot tower and couldn't upgrade because there was another station on 92.1 in Hialeah, Florida. The Hialeah station later moved to 92.3 and both stations upgraded. Muzak was carried on WIRK-FM if memory serves.

I worked at WNGS in 1980-1981. Mr Pearl let his son Bill run the station as GM. People who knew more than I did said Bill didn't have much interest in radio and was more interested in being a writer. WNGS was one of those colorful-odd-funky Mom and Pop operations that sadly you don't see anymore.
