92.1 WROU Music Transformation

92.1 WROU sounds more Adult Urban than ever. Adult Urban and Urban AC is NOT the same, but many could mistake it to be.

WROU is sounding like a major-market Urban AC... I've heard them play "Usher - Yeah" and "Keyshia Cole - Let It Go" and "Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance" this is OUTSIDE of their Gem City Old School Jam on Friday and Saturday nights. Garth Adams is doing a great job programming it and being the PD. There was a time before when WROU beat HOT 1029 in the book. That's impressive for a (former Radio One) Urban AC to beat a RHY/URBAN. But, Hot 1029 is poorly programmed anyway.

WROU is a station that doesn't get much exposure here on the boards... do you think it could transform into the old U92 Jamz and let HOT 1029 be the CHR? 1029 could STOMP 945 especially now with the Premium Choice on. Even if programmed crappy... but I doubt it'd be that bad.

What should WROU do?

I've said many times before that 92.1 should go Urban and let Hot 102.9 go CHR. Or they always have the option of dumping Fly on 92.9 and going back to CHR as Z-93 since they kept the WGTZ call letters(I've always wondered if this was why they never switched the calls on 92.9 to WING-FM or something with a flight theme).

Fly 92.9 IS a flight theme! (duh)

He simply stated the call letters, not name itself.

U92 as Urban or at least Urban-AC leaning Urban would be big for the Dayton area, especially if they hit the streets and got the staff like the old U92. 1029 could merge into a CHR (even with Hits Now syndication) and do fine. 929 could stay Fly since they have so much faith in it. I doubt anything goes down though because all 3 stations are doing fairly well in the books, only because there's no competition though. If this was a bigger market, 921 (if any) would survive. Fly would probably fail with competition. HOT would easily fail. It sounds horrble and slow on new music, just like Channel is with Premium Choice.

I don't think Main Line wants to go backwards and go back to Z93. But, it is a mystery why the calls haven't been changed. I'd love for Z93 to come back strong Eaton Dayton and Springfield alive. But, I doubt it. CHR is at 945 for the time being.

Thanks lovejamminoldies...you were right, I did mean the call letters not the name of the station. I have always wondered why they kept the WGTZ calls in place seeing that they're the only link of 92.9 to the Great Trails and Z-93 days. WING-FM would've been a great idea for calls. If they wanted to keep the WGTZ calls they could've moved it to the AM.

Here's what I think:

Main Line isn't a huge company, they wanna bring in the cash but NOT do anything big. I think they put trust into their programmers. If Radio One still owned the cluster, Z93 would still be around.

Sometimes I wish R1 would have stayed also..Z needed an upgrade....and Kiss Country did well for a chain that mostly focuses on R&B....but as such, they focused on Hot rather than Z.

HOT swept the ratings... WROU swept in the ratings. Z did not. Z was down with 945. I don't think R1 wants to put time into a station who sucks. Just like CC, hence Premium Choice is here in Dayton. Now both are gone. :D

So I've been listening a lot lately and they are live and local during the day - thats impressive for a small-market Urban AC.
They also kick off their old school jam Fridays at 5pm - 12a, Saturdays at 7p - 12a
Columbus's Magic doesn't even do this.
However.... I think they could be looking toward a more current sound! They changed their sub-positioner from R&B & Classic Soul to Today's R&B and Old School, and the old school is only mentioned in some of the sweepers. R&B & Classic Soul is barely heard in any of the imaging. Garth Adams is the right PD for this station and should also be for HOT 1029

But remember, too...it seemed like once Radio One bought the properties, Z became a red-headed stepchild, budget wise.

CHR is a format that REQUIRES promotional push and constant bucks fed in for both air staff and marketing to win. Z had none of those things. They survived as long as they did on heritage. And that's all they had left at the end.

But just remember - 94-5's days are probably numbered. So, we'll see what happens if and when that sale occurs.

Kevin is spot-on here. I've been saying for a couple years on this board that HOT got the preferred treatment and Z was just left blowing in the wind. RO can take 90% of the blame for Z's downfall, but don't forget the bad decisions of Z-93 PDs of the past which started the downfall. I'm just sayin'.

I totally agree that Z was left to fail in which it did. Radio One just doesn't handle CHR's correctly. Funny thing is, look at 92.9 now! It's Main Line's baby. Fly 929 is what they care about the most now. However, I don't think they are leaving HOT or 921 out to dry. They care about those and how it's affecting the company, but when it comes down to those, they want Fly with the numbers and the lead.
