92.3 Call Letters

I had an epiphany: Why don't they just bring the WNEW call letters back to New York under 92.3 Now? They would obviously make the most sense for the station, provided they're going to be in it for the long haul, on the heels of signing Nick Cannon for morning drive. Think about it, CBS can do a three-way swap with other retired call letters they own: They could put WBCN on 102.3 in West Palm Beach from 1660 in Charlotte. The WXRK calls can then be parked on 1660.

People associate WNEW-FM with progressive rock and the old AOR format. The kids listening to 92.3 Now would not appreciate the calls nor would it attract listeners. Likewise WNEW on the AM dial is associated with adult standards. I would like adult standards played on 102.7 HD2 with that station branded as WNEW.

Call letters don't mean anything to people anymore unless the call letters are actually used in the station's name, like "95-5 PLJ" or "107.5 WBLS". How many people on the street could actually name the call letters for stations like Q104 or Lite 106.7.

I know the topic is irrelevant except for the concern of some radio geeks, but when you have a few sets of retired call letters, how much would it hurt to do a presto-change-o for the West Palm Beach station - "B106.3," btw - the Charlotte station and New York's 92.3. WBCN would at least be relevant with "B106.3" as a station name, and WNEW somewhat relevant with "92.3 Now." WXRK? Well, it's not like they're using them for one of their rock stations right now...

Better yet, why not just buy the right to use the WNOW-FM calls?

My HD radio shows the "call letters" of 92.3 as NOW-FM. Other stations display their actual calls.

It'd hurt to the tune of $95/station... (FCC filing fee)

We've got a station in Nashville that's been through at least three formats since they picked up the "WGFX" call letters. They haven't used "Fox" as a slogan in at least ten years. These days, they're "The Zone" with an all-sports format. You only hear the call letters at legal ID time.

Really I'm more surprised that nobody else has paid them off to give up the calls to get them assigned to some "The Fox" somewhere else. Kinda shows just how irrelevant most stations consider call letters these days.

Correct.

CBS doesn't want any hint that someone could use the calls on a resale to another buyer for a lot more money against them in original markets like New York or Boston.

So, they parked them where they do little damage and have less meaning.

The WXRK call letters aren't neccessarily as legendary as WBCN's.
K-Rock was based on KROQ in LA, now those are legendary call letters.
Call letters don't matter at all with a radio station. AMP in LA got up to a 3.7 share without changing their call letters from KLSX.

KLSX changed calls to KAMP-FM in June. The station only retained its KLSX calls for the first four months of its run as Amp.

And in those 3 months, they jumped to a 3.7 share in the PPMs.
Right after they switched to KAMP, there was no growth in the ratings. They remained still at a 3.7.
