92.3 FreeFM - one sorry station

AllAccess puts the final piece in the puzzle:
After temporarily filling in for mornings at Talk KIFR (106.9 FREE FM)/SAN FRANCISCO, THE DOGHOUSE- JV AND ELVIS- told listeners TUESDAY that they're heading to NEW YORK for middays 10a-2p at sister WXRK/NEW YORK when that station flips to Talk under the FREE FM banner on JANUARY 3.

To review, that makes:
6-10 David Lee Roth
10-2 JV and Elvis
2-3 Penn Jillette (on 1 hr delay)
3-7 Leslie Gold

Weak in AMD, weak in PMD. That wraps up the daytime lineup, although I don't believe they've defined what times constitute "nights and weekends" for music. Will there be an early evening talk show? Local from NYC... WW1's Tom Leykis live? Tom seems to think he will get passed over for WXRK, but the whole idea of having a talk station that offers Infinity a different dynamic in terms of more spot inventory, ownership of content, etc. seems stupid when you're going to make it more than half music.

Tom Leykis flopped in New York back when WNEW was talk. I doubt he'll return. New Yorkers seem more strict about their radio programming, and are unaccepting of any show not based out of New York. The syndicated shows that are doing well in New York are all based in New York (Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern....maybe Al Franken, Opie and Anthony), and when a radio show is syndicated to a mid-to-high profile NYC station, said show is usually forced to move to New York.

People point to WNEW and say that FM talk will never exist again. How many country, AC, rock, etc. stations does the average market cycle through... some succeed, some don't. Some stations are born with the silver spoon. Others have to fight.

If NYC wants to keep talk relegated to the 82-death crowd, so be it. Speaking of WOR, Savage broadcasts out of SF and wins the early evening talk daypart. Crosstown at WABC, Laura Ingraham is, IIRC, broadcasting out of DC. George Noory broadcasts from LA or St. Louis.

I agree with you, but in this case, Tom Leykis has spent much of his career in New York (state) and has a successful, already national show. It's not like they're giving him mornings. Early evenings, for talk and radio in general, is somewhat a throwaway shift. If you want to put him in further oblivion, also known as the "He's on our network, let's clear him somewhere" effect, there's always late nights 10-1. God, there's nothing on then for anyone under 60. Screw the music; WHFS/Baltimore sounds like crap after merging the rock and talk formats, and KQBZ/Seattle is well on its way to doing the same.
