92.3 The Fan January ratings

Does anyone know if they are out yet? How WKNR did? I tried finding them, with no luck. I'm kind of getting used to the Fan, curious to see how things go as they work out the kinks.

I just found it-looks like 92.3 is slowly climbing? In November, KNR had a 4.0 compared to 92.3, which had 1.2 January had KNR at 3.6 compared to 92.3's 2.0

The Fan's getting there.

It took awhile for people to find out about 92.3, but it looks like the word is getting out.

KNR's numbers took a bit of a dip, as now more and more people know that there's an alternative if you want sports talk.

Once WKRK gets some play by play (the big guns--Tribe, Browns, Cavs or Buckeyes) then they'll really be in position to overtake 850.

A little promotion would help, too. A billboard or two, some cross-promotion on other CBS stations, an ad or two, anything.

There were some cross promotion before the flip last year. I remember hearing Kiley and Booms in a promo that was heard on WDOK and Q104. They should resume the promotion again.

Nice to see The Fan increasing in ratings. I think by the end of the year, they'll surpass WKNR big time. I do agree they need play-by-play.

Supposedly CBS is really courting the Cleveland Indians, who's contract with WTAM ends after the 2012 season.

It's just my guess, but: I'm betting the Tribe will tell CBS: "if you move The Fan to 98.5, we'll talk". Signal is obviously much, much better...and easily covers a 60-mile radius of Cleveland.

The fact that WTAM can be heard up to 750 miles away at night is a nice ego trip...but, the overwhelming majority of WTAM listeners are in northeastern Ohio...where there are radio network affilliates already carrying the Indians games in Akron, Canton, Wooster, Yougnstown, Elyria, Ashabula, Ashland-Mansfield, and Sandusky...just to name a few NE Ohio cities.

WTAM local and Indians network advertisers who buy commercials in Indians baseball because of WTAM's big night signal could care less about 4 people who are listening in Kentucky or eastern Pennsylvania.

And, with a big network of Indians affilliates, the team would lose little if anything by going FM for it's Cleveland-based station.

Wow-if they get the Indians they would blow right by KNR. It's just nice to have an alternative-even after 92.3 started, I really didn't get used to it-I think people tend to go with more familiar voices, but I haven't listened to the Really Big Show in months-the bad radio with Fedor and Hammer just drove me away-the Bull is from New York (I think?)-I remember before the Denver/Cleveland game he was wearing a Broncos Jersey before the game on Browns warm up-I understand wanting to root for your home team, but it became more of an attention thing than anything, then became outright annoying.

Listened to WKNR lately? Myself I've listened less to WKNR in the past 7 months than at any time in the station's history on 850 & 1220.

My WKNR favorites have always been Brinda & Roda (yeah, I know...that might make me sound like an old fart)....the other guys are OK...and it's not that I don't wish all the WKNR hosts well, I do. Just don't like all the silliness in presentation style. A little bit of that "male lifestyle" stuff does adds spice to their shows....but most of the guys on WKNR carry it to ridiculous lengths, IMHO. Personally, I don't care if radio consultants tell them that's what most listeners want...I'm just one of those who don't.

923TheFan is much more my of my type of sportstalk. Only problem I have with them is the inconsistent reception in northeastern Ohio. WCOL in Columbus (also on 92.3) was fighting 923TheFan in my car when I was in Medina on Wednesday. At times even the Detroit station also on 92.3 interfers with 923TheFan well inside the Cleveland metro area. Sure wish they'd move the station to 98.5.

No offense to classic rock WNCX...but that format nationally is aging so rapidly, it's becoming the rock 'n roll version of "Music of Your Life" standards. Unless WNCX is making a lot, lot, lot more money than most of us know (doubtful)....why waste a great-signal on a fading format? It's a mystery to me.

I can tell you living in Canton, the signal from 92.3 The Fan is very, very weak and inconsistent. If I make it up to northern Stark County, it comes in better. From the bits that I have heard, it is a good alternative to WKNR. I don't know about anybody else, but I really don't care listening to a show for 4 hours where Rizzo and Hammer are talking about Rizzo's contract renewal or whether or not Hammer is important to the show. It was either Thursday or Friday last week that they spent the whole show talking about the consultant in Texas not allowing certain callers on. Wow, that was entertaining!!! At least when I listen to The Fan, they are actually talking about sports. I think in the long run, WKNR is going to be in trouble, especially if The Fan can pick up the Indians.

This past week Adam the Bull has been paired with Ken Carman on afternoon drive. Those two make an excellent pair. If 92.3 would show Dustin Fox the door this show would be outstanding. Give the 7-12am slot to one of the update guys (Anthony Lima or Chris Villar). Fox adds absolutely nothing to Bull other than to repeat what he says all the time.

@Cleveland Radio Insider - That's not all Dustin adds. He also regularly starts the debate as to whether something is good or great, excellent or good, stinks or is just below average. He's good for that too.

Dustin adds very little more than Fillar does for Carmen at night.

I know the station would rather have new blood, but I know Les Levine fills in-he is best doing the show alone, and interacting with callers-I would at least try to fit him in with a premanent gig on some timeslot.

I think the Bull/Carman pairing would be a smart move for 92.3. My hope is that they are listening to this and decide to go with it. Dustin can work weekends and try to get better. No way should a guy with zero broadcasting experience get the afternoon drive slot even if he is just a sidekick. Dustin can't even figure out how to use a cough button. You hear him cough on the air constantly.

I don't believe that WNCX format is as don and going out as some believe. Caught a group of 20-somethings listening to 98.5 FM just a couple of days ago. Music that has stood the test of time works for more then just those who were there at the time it was recorded.

Advertising...especially national advertising (about 40% to 50% of most stations' revenues) decide which stations/formats to buy because of ratings. Right or wrong, it's the way it is: radio is a business.

Classic rock's core in 2012 is men 45-54...and it's fighting to hold on to men age 35-44...and losing the battle. Those are the facts...not causal observations.

For every 20 young people who are in their 20's who love classic rock, there are 1,000+ who don't. Again, reality...not opinion.

Business (including advertising sales) is based on what MOST people do. Most people love forever the music they listened to in their teens and 20's...again: reality...not an isolated situation.
