92.5 - How Low Can You Go?

(Source: http://www.radio-info.com/markets/san-antonio)

KRPT has been stuck at 0.1 over the last three months, but their cume has dropped dramatically since then, from 18,700 in February in 11,000 in March to 10,600 in April.

At this rate, a Clear Channel-owned station in the company's own backyard is on the verge of not registering in a PPM period.

By the way, the "KRPT-FM" with these ratings at the above link is listed with a "Country" format. Then, if you scroll all the way down to the bottom, you'll see "KPRT-FM", a CC-owned station classified as "Talk." I thought PPM was supposed to prevent these errors? Sad.

As alluded to a while back, it may not matter "how low they go," or how bad the signal is:

It's a dog of a signal over most of the metro. Part of the value not apparent in the ratings comes from using it as a flanker of sorts to keep the second tier of syndicated talkers from being used by a competitor to compete with The Big Billing Blowtorch.

I still stand by that quote. ;D

I have to believe that it wouldn't matter what format was on that signal. When I'm on the north side, the signal is worse than the signal of Bob FM in San Marcos. When I'm downtown, it's no better. It's just not listenable in the upscale parts of the city and I suspect that spots on The Patriot would be a tough sell to advertisers as a standalone buy if the programming wasn't something that interested them directly.

The signal is not going to get any better. 92.5 in Elgin is moving into Austin (technically the COL will be Sunset Valley.) KRPT is boxed in.

Actually KRPT is already pretty much maxed out due to other stations (e.g., KROM, KRTU). Despite the way it might appear the KXXS move to Sunset Valley (which isn't a done deal yet but probably will be approved) won't have any affect on KRPT.

i also believe talk fm stations will be changing pretty soon. in austin big talker and the juice 1370 standing side by side in the rating numbers. what are the other possible music formula's they can put on krpt. maybe spanish, dance music might work.

Not sure if we need another Spanish station. We already have plenty.

As for dance, that could work but it's not really my style.

Maybe they can bring back the Texas country? Not really my style either but it might get more listeners with something noone else plays.

They could sell it to a mom an pop in Devine and let it go back there, the signal is useless in San Antonio. San Marcos has a Community Radio Station on 92.5 plus KXXS in Elgin. If I were Clear Channel I would sell 92.5 and buy Cox's 106.7 and simulcast WOAI.
