92.5 The River

I agree with you. They are awesome, not too soft, not too hard. They are just right. It's different, if you like to listen to something for a change.
Normally, if I listen to music, I listen to Mix 104.1, Amp 103.3, and Country 102.5, but if I like to hear something different, I'll listen to 92.5, just to hear what is on.

WXRV-92.5's transmitter is well north of Boston, and where I am (in Norwood, Massachusetts; about 14 miles southwest of downtown Boston), it's difficult to pick-up thanks to WPRO-92.3 in Providence.

If the owners of WPLM-99.1 were to put that station for sale, I could see WXRV interested in buying it to rebroadcast "The River", and to give it a strong signal in Boston's southern suburbs, not to mention Providence, Southeastern Massachusetts,. and most of Cape Cod.

That would be good use of 99.1 signal. I wonder if GBH is still looking at it for CRB, or did the Bryant deal take that ouyt of the equation.

I think 'GBH indeed is looking at that.

My guess is that the owners of 99.1 will sell within the year, and that the odds are 50-50 that WXRV or WGBH will end up with it. I don't see any other potential buyers.

I sure hope not. Don't get me wrong, 'XRV and 'CRB are great stations. But I would hate to see yet another local voice (WPLM-FM) being silenced forever just to put another FM clone in an area that already has enough service. 'GBH is already well covered as it is. Leave well enough alone.

It wouldn't make much sense for 99.1 to be a simulcast of 'CRB because I think most of their listeners can hear WFCC from Cape Cod.

Agreed. The community's need for local, independent broadcasting far exceed's either station's need to increase their range.

This is of course, assuming that 99.1 would sell. People talk on these boards like the stations are just waiting to be picked off one by one.

But as far as the "local service" goes for WPLM, what really is it? Delilah at night? The same boring songs that are also on Magic? Show me what they do that is so original, unique and compelling local content.

I would feel bad for the staff if they got the boot, but this is the we have chosen...

River is good but could be great. WPLM has a superb signal but needs direction. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make great sounding radio. It's like going to the movies. A good movie is a good movie and sells tickets. A bad one is forgotten. Much forgettable radio going around. Shame. When a station connects with it audience and signal area with compelling content...it wins.

"great sounding radio" is in the ear of the beholder. What doesn't sound great to you may and does sound great to others. If a station's turning a profit, isn't it winning?
