92.5 XHRM Info found. On Air Date 1972

Hey Guys:

Found something interesting on 92.5 XHRM.

Seems 92.5 went on the air January 19, 1972 as a Beautiful Music station. Then sometime in 1975 XHRM went to a R&B Soul format.

True?

Also I found a survey from 1977 showing it was doing R&B during that time. A December 1975 DX List shows that XHRM at 92.5 is doing soul. Also found a PDF from the FR dated 1-31-75 saying that XHRM 92.5 is in operation.

Wikipedia has it going on air in February 1979. Confused on this one.

The January 19, 1972 date is correct insofar as that is when XHRM-FM got its concession. For a station of this vintage, a concession date can sometimes be after the station began transmissions (90.3 is an example of this: XHIS-FM was on the air in the fall of 1970 and took three years to get its concession). It's quite difficult to find the information generally, and while SD is a bit easier, not always.

XHRM went soul in 1975. Then in September 1979, Phase One, which had been the programmer, was booted out and Combined Broadcasting, Inc., became the operator. (Through this whole time, of course, José Luis Rivas Marentes, who owned Radio Moderna Mexicana and gave the station its calls, was the owner.)

In December 1980, Willie Morrow, who made his fortune selling California Curl haircare products, took over operations of XHRM. Morrow ran the station for almost the remainder of the 80s — he was ousted in November 1989 after failing to pay the $55,000-a-month rent for two months. (In his defense, XHRM had been struggling after a January 1988 tower collapse that saw the station be forced to operate with reduced power and lose national advertising accounts, as well as issues with studio equipment.) Less than a year later, in June 1990, XHRM's staff was informed that the Modern Radio Corp. (probably a US related company to Radio Moderna Mexicana) was going to go bankrupt and that Morrow could retake control of the station — the latter did not happen. (In September, the station's problems became even worse when Rivas Marentes died in a plane crash. His son, Fernando, took the reins of the concessionaire and the US operating company.

"Disco Soul Beat Radio" was on during the evening hours. I got many copies of Soul Beat Magazine that was published bi-weekly. When XHRM went to 24hrs soul they were known as "92 STAR 5", with the bumper stickers proclaiming "Disco, Soul, and Jazz". And when Disco K-105 seemed to be very popular (1979), XHRM turned into a "Blues, Ballads, and Jazz" format. Eventually XHRM turned back into a rhythm station, with a high school friend as part of the "Breakfast Flakes" morning show.
