DCRTV is reporting that Redskins owner Dan Snyder is interested in buying Mega's 92.7/94.3 rimshot combo as well as their AM 730 in Alexandria. A Redskins-based sports talk format is rumored to be in the works for the FMs, and all 3 stations would carry 'Skins games.
This would be a pretty crazy undertaking. I don't think any other NFL team has tried to buy a broadcast outlet. Usually, it's the other way around. Snyder's biggest challenge wouldn't be how to program the stations though, it would be the awful signals he'd have to work with. On WJFK, the 'Skins get coverage of at least 85% of the market. On 92.7/94.3, they'd be be able to reach about half the market, more if we're counting good car radios, much less if we're only counting lousy clock radios. There's a huge hole in the middle of the market that neither station covers. The 'Skins would be stuck with no receivable radio station in the middle of DC. 730 might help a little with day games, but as soon as twilight comes, that frequency is a mess. This seems like an idea that, if true, is destined to fail. The frequencies just don't get out well enough to support this kind of station.
