92.7 FM playlist this morning

My favorite part is that they've service marked the word "playlist" and are now willing to license it to other radio stations.

This is the dumbest s**t I've ever heard.

Much luck Alan Burns. Hope it works as well as Movin' did for you!

Playlist 92.7 sounds mighty familiar to Play 98.7 in Tampa ;)
I listened in for a little bit today and the station sounded pretty good actually! I loved the variety although it could use more currents for a nice balance, only current I heard in the 3PM hour was "I Gotta Feeling". I definately they can improve their numbers and revenue in the Orange County and Ventura areas with this format if tweaked a little bit to cater more currents to keep people from tuning into KOST or KBIG, which seem like the stations P-List wants to challenge.

This station mainly serves the OC and Thousand Oaks. You cant harldy hear it anywhere else in Los Angeles but in your car. So I guess the music taste cater's to them.

Wow I didnt know Alan Burns was involed in this. Well they sucked at the whole Rythnmic AC format from 2006- now whatever Movin stations are left but its a different format. So I guess its called Adult Hits maybe. I thought KJLL was for sale or maybe I was wrong?

It's not the size of the song list that matters. It's the songs in the list, and how they get rotated. The average person has less than 200 titles on their iPod. Size doesn't matter.

200, is that it? iPods and MP3 nowadays are meant to hold thousands of songs.

Yep, and most people don't fill up their iPods.

It is unofficially for sale....the Amaturo's have a dollar figure at which they are known to be willing to sell. The offers thus far are about half of that dollar figure.

I've started a new format called S**t Sandwich.

I am now willing to license that name to other stations.

We've done market research and have discovered that every survey participant actually
does s**t , and therefore we feel this format will garner a large percentage of all population spectrums.

LOL make sure you trademark that Buckethead!! :)

In the Arcade Fire thread, David Gleason said this about 92.7...
"Playlist has a very inferior Orange County signal which was shoehorned in when the station moved from Avalon."

Unless you live in Irvine or Newport Beach, David ;)
Actually their signal is not horrible... its pretty decent throughout much of Orange County, though when outside a ten mile radius of their OC transmitter, their signal pales when compared with any of the Mt Wilson signals. Parts of Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach don't receive the signal too well thanks to the topography of these areas.

Love this quote from Playlist 92.7 general manager Matthew Rodriguez: “From the research we’ve seen we know that both listeners and advertisers will love it. It’s very hard to find a ‘hole’ in the LA market, but we feel Playlist 92.7 has found and filled one.”

Hmmmmmmmmm lots of Indie rock and Adult Alternative fans will have a problem with that statement.

As to the trainwrecks, true that's radio talk, but remember when Top 40 in the 60s, 70s, and even 80s featured such musical combinations on a regular basis and no one complained. Thanks to fragmentation we now can look at trainwrecks as straying from conventional wisdom in programming today.

Pandora will never work for me because I like such a diverse variety of music how can a site like Pandora know what I like to hear? Are Pandora fans all automatons?

Also, is vanilla the favorite ice cream flavor of fans of the tried and true?

The 64 dbu signal covers 1.6 million. OC has 3 million. That's an inferior signal.

By comparison, KEBN covers 2.4 million as do KALI and KWIZ.

In my opinion: "inferior" does not = "horrible"

Having worked with signals like that, there is nothing better than "Horrible" you can say about them. The Amaturo OC station covers less than 15% of market population, which is by all measures, horrible.

It's actually a good point.

Below horrible: a single A at the extreme ends of a large market. Its opportunity is to do some kind of ethnic or religious programming or sell cheap spots to a local market if the format they run can generate sales.

Horrible. A single A inside a large market (additional fringe signals don't add anything), but covering less than 25% of the population. Playlist.

Bad: a pair of in-market simulcast FMs that don't overlap much and get about half of the market well. Tough sell, and if the format is good, it will be grabbed by a higher tier of stations. KRCD/V

Adequate: Three A's simulcast, where the coverage approaches 75%. KBUE/A/EBN

Good: a lower power B, or a B with reduced height. KYSR, KXOL, KROQ. It takes a bit more work, but if you outperform you make up for the extreme geography you miss.

Excellent: a full B at good height, even if at a power lower than others at same height. Even better with boosters in shadow areas. KSCA, The Sound, and the higher power ones on Wilson

Best: A B with one or more fringe stations to supplement missing areas KIIS

These factors influence the loong term ability to make a profit of any station. Sometimes one of the inferior ones gets lucky, but the proposition is risky.

Well I guess their trying to include Los Angeles in their demo. I just saw a billboard for the station off the 710 North in Bell Gardens.

I believe in their TOH ID they're saying "L.A.'s Playlist 92.7"

Orange County IS LA for Arbitron... the MSA is all of LA and Orange Counties.

Anyone notice the official name change to Playlist 92.7? Didn't think so. The OC Register claims the change happened on March 18th:

Apparently a change to avoid scaring men away. Find it kind of funny that the Register claims "he knows what listeners want," yet the station is in the ratings basement.

There's a billboard for Playlist 92.7 on N 405 somewhere around Carson, find that kind of funny too as the station barely comes in on car radios around there.

??? The article you linked to was dated Feb 17th and nowhere in it does Gary Lycan refer to an official name change for March 18th. (It actually happened on the morning of Feb 14th)

The billboard you mention on the 405 in Carson is interesting, because if its legible from the northbound lane, a traveler is going towards the fringe area of the signal (s) [the OC txmtr and the Thousand Oaks txmtr]. Now if the billboard was for southbound travelers that would make more sense as they would be traveling towards the OC transmitter.

Going back to the article.... It was online on Friday Feb 17th but it appeared in the print version of the Register on Sunday Feb 20th. Gary Lycan solicited responses from readers/listeners to 92.7 to give their opinions on the station. There was absolutely zero mention of anyone's opinion of the station on both the Feb 27th and March 6th columns published. The latest column (to be published Sunday) http://www.ocregister.com/entertainment/radio-291650-talk-host.html also makes no mention of Playlist 92.7. If a tree falls in a forest, does anyone hear the sound?? :)
