92.7 RIVERSIDE HISTORY TO 1983

Hey Guys:

My notes on 92.7 in Riverside is really jumbled up.

Could anybody tell me the history of 92.7 up till it changed to country KWDJ in 1983?

Thanks

T.J.

It started out as KACE-fm, a similcast of it's am 1570 KACE in 1957 and was basically block programed. They went AOR briefly in 1968 with Pete Moss as pd. I think that lasted only about 6 months before returning to what they were doing before. They first went country in 1973 with Arlen Sanders as pd, replaced later by Al Gordon who named it "The Lucky ACE". In 1976 it shifted to soft AC. Later it also attempted "All Disco" in 1977, another 6 month run before going CHR for a time. After 95.1 KQLH turned into KFRG 92.7 changed calls to KQLH going soft ac for a while before before going country.

Sometime in the mid-70s they had the calls KHNY (Honey Radio). They used them until becoming KQLH.

I worked for the station in 1981. It was KHONEY 92.7. We were pretty much Top 40 then. We had a very stressed out GM who would run down the hall and cuss us out if the stopset wasn't perfect. I was working mid days as Dale Stevens. I didn't last long. The station dropped in the ratings, and the GM went to 6 hour airshifts. The morning guy worked from 6 am to 12 noon, the afternoon drive guy worked from 12 noon to 6 pm. Wish I could say it was a fun job, but I needed therapy afterwards. Lol! After a while the format changed to Country as KWDJ. The GM left. The station did well until KQLH 95.1 switched to KFROG 95.1. The station just couldn't compete. Since they thought KQLH 95.1 was such a great station they flipped the format to Adult Contemporary and became KQLH. The station was sold to the owners of KFROG. They changed the call letters to KOOJ 92.7 Playing New Country. Eventually Amaturo sold KFROG. KOOJ became KLITE 92.7 and simulcast with the 92.7 in Thousand Oaks, CA. The station then moved to Adelanto, CA. The owners then moved the 92.7 station on Catalina Island to Fountain Valley, CA. Its still simulcasts with Thousand Oaks, and is now Air1.

The two 92.7's in Fountain Valley and Thousand Oaks are now owned by Educational Media. I believe they also own 92.7 in Adelanto.
