92.7 Smooth FM

As a manual FM radio dial tuner, on Thursday, I discovered a new Easy Listening radio station at 92.7 Smooth FM, "Your Relaxing Music Choice" based out of Winter Park.
Call letters are WRXW-LP owned by Hispanics United In Broadcasting.
Their website is www.92smooth.com & they do stream live on TuneIn.

How exciting to have something new & different on the radio nowadays!

I agree having something new on the dial is good in Orlando.

But wow, could they make the website look any more similar to the one for Viva in Tampa? Where I'm going with this is.... Is -LP licensing the new group ownership gimmick? (See http://radioweapons.wix.com/vivafm)

I'm sure Hispanics United In Broadcasting have absolutely no joint interest with Hispanic Arts of Tampa. It must only be a coincidence they have one heck of a similar looking web presence otherwise. After seeing this similarity, I really can't blame Beasley for getting upset at them providing a form of competition in the marketplace in Tampa with Viva, as ...well... it certainly smells of a business-oriented effort hiding out in the LP sector of "community oriented" radio.

And maybe it's all fine, and perfectly legal. Something still stinks about it all. Stopping now before I end up having to Take It Outside. :)

Or maybe one guy is doing websites for LPFM's at cheap prices. The LPFM community from my understanding shares a lot of stuff with each other.

The way LPFM ownership is structured, it has to be different entities that own each license. The organization holds the license, and the individuals on each board have no ownership interest whatsoever.

It would be too difficult for one person or group to play that game. Non-Profits have to show all their records at the end of each year, and I believe they are public.

One guy already tried to play that game. I believe he filed for 245 LPFM Applications all over the country. I don't think a single one has been granted yet. Same guy who got a bunch of translators during The Great Translator Invasion.

One LPFM in Florida has board member on its organization who is a family member and lives in the same residence as a commercial station owner who owns multiple commercial stations as well as translators. All perfectly legal as long as the LPFM 60dBu does not cross the 60dBu of a commercial FM Station or 2mV of an AM station.

There are a lot of LPFMs with ties to each other. Friends and colleagues, or family members in the same market or nearby markets.

I know one guy that has an LPFM, and he is helping many other organizations that were granted in this window build theirs as well, as most do not know how to do it themselves.

There are just too many restrictions on LPFM's to make a worthwhile amount of money from Mom N' Pop advertising in such a limited coverage area. Too much work for little return.

There is a petition proposing to allow LPFM's to go commercial as well as allow multiple ownership, but I doubt that will fly. If that happens then larger radio outfits will have to worry. Large Ad Agencies do not send money to Non-Commercial Stations or LPFM's, but if they were allowed to go commercial, then that would definitely eat a chunk out of the big boys.

I think LPFMs have eaten up most of the channels that could have been used to help AM with Translators. The AM Problem should have been first in line for FM Channels. However, I do have respect for some of those guys. I watched a buddy of mine who had a dream of one day owning his own Radio Station (He started off with an internet station, then a Part 15), work so hard to build an LPFM, and finally after he achieved it, passed away suddenly at 35 years old from a heart attack. He literally worked himself to death from all the stress and lack of rest building that small station.

I believe they are relatives. But having said that - what difference does it make if the websites are similar? Different cities, different formats, etc. They all have some serious radio backgrounds and they are doing what they need to do to succeed. Why the butt hurt about some websites? Just be glad there is a new station hopefully playing something that isn't already there. Best of luck to WRXW and Viva as well - go get 'em!

Well I'll have to check this one out when I go back to Altamonte in the next few weeks. I moved back to Brandon. I'll try it on the skywave and the cc 2e.

This is an awesome station. I can get it pretty well in Altamonte. They have some music on the radio I have not heard in years.

Florida has formats that are rare outside the state. With Orlando doing Soft AC, it joins the highly successful WFEZ and WDUV and the new 106.5 in Jacksonville. Agree. It is nice to have a station that isn't Hot AC or AC. Way too many everywhere. Also, The FM "hot talk" format seems to be a Florida only format with WZZR,WHPT and 104.1 in Orlando in the format. Why the Soft AC and Hot Talk stations haven't really caught on outside Fla. is a mystery. So many sound alike stations everywhere.

Austin, how do you like The CCrane Skywave? I find it a nice powerful little radio. Those direct presets are great on a radio that small.

I love my skywave and my cc 2e. Some of the best radios I have ever owned.
