92.7 to flip to Mexican?

I saw this posted over on the "other" board with the article originally appearing in "Inside Radio." There's speculation that Univision may flip 92.7 from the La Kalle simulcast to a Mexican format.

This would be the first effort on a NYC-area FM to put on a Mexican format if I'm not mistaken.

This may make some sense...ratings for La Kalle in the Long Island book have been down, down, down and were pretty paltry in the fall book. I seem to recall the station actually getting better numbers in the pre-simulcast days.

This may be a wise move for Univision because the simulcast does not seem to be paying off, two years (to the day!) that they took over from WLIR and currently there is no station serving this growing community.

Since WLIR, on paper, puts out a city-grade signal in much of the five boroughs, it is entirely possible that they could even attempt to get a booster or two on 92.7 to better serve some areas which may have significant Mexican populations. WLIR had applied for a booster to be located in Midtown Manhattan on 92.7 back in 2003, which never went on the air as the station was sold. I do believe it was approved by the FCC.

If it happens, I'm curious as to whether or not the simulcast will continue or if the Long Island would get its own content.

Of course, there's also the possibility that 105.9 will flip at some point as well, though there haven't been any specific rumors about that occurring. That said, La Kalle's numbers have been slipping and there's been a definite decrease in the emphasis of reggaeton music in their playlist, with more mainstream hip-hop and reggae seemingly added.

I don't see 105.9 going Mexican though.

The switch (92.7 only, not 105.9) is confirmed on the NYC board, and is happening Thursday afternoon. Regional Mexican format. More details posted on the NYC board by David Eduardo.

Noteworthy that this happens just over two years to the day after Univision took over from TMO and WLIR.

Actually, the flip to a regional Mexican format happend Wednesday afternoon, the day before the book started. The new morning show with Piolin started this morning.

Yes, the last song on WLIR on 92.7 was Forever Young, and the remix version to boot...but the first song Island 94.3 played immediately after 92.7 flipped was "Mexican Radio." 94.3 stood to gain some of the listeners who lost 92.7 and picked up former LIR jocks like Malibu Sue, but other than that, it doesn't seem like 94.3's ratings ever got much of a boost from LIR going away on 92.7.

I understood 94.3 not attempting to pick up the WLIR format, after all, as much as many of us loved it, it was NOT a ratings or money maker. My understanding is that 94.3 bills well. However, with any creativity at all they could have tweaked their model enough to get some sort of lasting bump in the ratings. For example, Malibu Sue at lunchtime is just a waste. Anyone who is a Malibu Sue fan is not around during the day to hear her. Placing Sue in the AM drive OR PM drive would have been perfect. During that daypart they could drop some of the softer 80s rock and go more 80s Alternative leaning mixed in with some current Adult Alternative stuff.

Could it hurt?

Malibu Sue in the morning would be nice...that's where she was back on 92.7 and most listeners would remember her in that timeslot. I don't see it happening though, especially with a new morning man coming in. Island has always struck me as a station that plays it safe and which doesn't take risks.

WLIR was not setting the world ablaze with ratings or presumably billing, but it was doing far better in the ratings than Island. I wouldn't be surprised if Island has better billing though, but LIR's audience was known to be very loyal to the station and its advertisters.

That was it. I knew there was a "Mexican Radio" connection somewhere. :-[
