I saw this posted over on the "other" board with the article originally appearing in "Inside Radio." There's speculation that Univision may flip 92.7 from the La Kalle simulcast to a Mexican format.
This would be the first effort on a NYC-area FM to put on a Mexican format if I'm not mistaken.
This may make some sense...ratings for La Kalle in the Long Island book have been down, down, down and were pretty paltry in the fall book. I seem to recall the station actually getting better numbers in the pre-simulcast days.
This may be a wise move for Univision because the simulcast does not seem to be paying off, two years (to the day!) that they took over from WLIR and currently there is no station serving this growing community.
Since WLIR, on paper, puts out a city-grade signal in much of the five boroughs, it is entirely possible that they could even attempt to get a booster or two on 92.7 to better serve some areas which may have significant Mexican populations. WLIR had applied for a booster to be located in Midtown Manhattan on 92.7 back in 2003, which never went on the air as the station was sold. I do believe it was approved by the FCC.
