92.7 WSJW

Hey Randy. I checked out 92.7 WSJW's stream for a spell tonight, and I must say you are fortunate to at least have a viable option on the FM dial when so many of us have none. Yes, it's not Jones, but it's not BA either. I heard a nice continuous run of tunes (40 minutes or so with no chatter) to include Euge Groove's "Religify," Richard Elliot's "Candlelight," Paul Brown's "The Rhythm Method," Brian Culbertson's "Get It On" and a couple of decent vocals like Player's "Baby Come Back." All very safe and from mainstream artists, but nice listening nonetheless. And I do like that it is locally programmed with local jocks spinning the tunes. Here's hoping they last. I did notice that they are having a closeout sale for their merchandise. Hopefully they are just fazing it out for newer stuff and it's not an ominous sign that they are about to flip to the ALL NEW HIP-HOP 92.7 ;D. As I am sure you know, Pennsylvania has a huge retirement population. My in-laws are retired and live in Penn National near Chambersburg, and it is a sea of retirees up there. So I think a station like that could potentially have a pretty loyal listener base.

Talk to you soon, and look forward to those Jones airchecks. I enjoyed the daylights out of spiritof67's tonight.

i missed this post a week ago. glad i found it now, because WSJW is my local smooth jazz station. well, not really local. i'm about 60 miles out from it, but i have a nice antenna that gets it pretty good on my one stereo. i agree. WSJW is obviously BA consulted with the "smoothest place on your radio" slogan and the 1:1 ratio, but they're not as bad as most BA stations. the PD there, paul scott, does a live and local morning show and does a really nice job. it's simple but he never seems to have trouble giving away prizes when he asks for caller 9. i spoke to him once when i won a prize and commended him for the station's sound. i asked him if he was worried with all the smooth jazz stations folding. he said the station is more than happy with their results and are doing just fine. that was about a year ago, but hopefully they still feel that way. the only show that is live is the morning show, the rest seems voicetracked, but it's locally programmed. no BA network at all. not even dave koz or ramsey lewis like what WJJZ did. Paul scott must insist on all local. good for him for standing up to BA. overall a decent station. tiny wattage. i think it's like 700 watts but that 700 watts sure gets around central PA anywhere from almost to maryland all the way up to pottsville. must have their stick on a mountain. i've been a fan since the station went on the air on march 1, 2004. it used to be "big oldies 92.7" which did poorly against 50,000 watt crosstown oldies competitor WSOX. from what i read, "big oldies 92.7's" sister station, WROZ, an AC station from nearby lancaster, PA, had a smooth jazz show on Sundays that was very popular and that was enough to convince Hall radio, the owners, to switch their failing oldies station to smooth jazz. i think they must package sell it with sister station WROZ. that along with the old population in the area that you mentioned, is keeping WSJW's head above water. even though WSJW ain't bad, they do have their share of clunkers. "brick house" by the commodores is the one that stands out to me as the worst. yes, "brick house!!" i was certain they flipped formats when i heard that the one day. oh and as for that "closeout" sale, my friend e-mailed the station about that. the PD responded and said the station is going nowhere. that they're just clearing out all merchandise to get new stuff.
