Hey t.j.- Here is what I remember about the early days of WYUT.
I arrived at WYUT/WALY in August of '79 and left at the end of that year. Both WALY and WYUT were top 40 at the time. 1420 was live and went by "The Mighty 14 Music Machine" It was a day-timer. (no Post Sunset) WYUT went by "Y-93" and was automated TM Stereo Rock.
The automation was state of the art for the time. It was the first computer automation I had ever seen. There were still 4 or 5 Scully's and SMC carousels but the "brain" of the unit was a small computer.
Each station had nice, contemporary jingles from TM. Both stations sounded like they were in a much bigger market with tight programming.
Both suffered from signal problems. As someone else mentioned; 1420's stick was right next to the river/barge canal and I was told, the ground system had been damaged by dredging. The FM tower location, I understand, is being moved to the Smith Hill farm to correct the signal issues the station had right from the start.
I stopped by in the early/mid 80's and both stations were now programming Music of Your life.
