92.9 - - - What should we do?

I think they have spent a lot to promote the station. %That have ran TV ads before. Granted they are stock ads of bands playing with a Dave FM slate at the end and a VO but they spenrt money on the ad time. They also have had as mentioned before other forms of ads the bus station by my office has had Dave ads for a ling time.

There was a brief television buy (2 weeks worth) 2 years ago when the station started, and not one thing since then. Billboards and bus stands are used by everyone, Kicks, V, Star, Q100, 96Rock, et. al.. I'm just saying, it's the same reason an independant will never win a major election. If everyone will outspend you, it makes it real hard to get your message out. Especially for the moring show. Has anyone ever seen one thing, other than the bus stops or wraps, that was B&F specific? The answer is no. The TV ads they did at the very beginning were pre-morning show....

I've seen some scattered magazine ads for BF.

What are the major marketing tactics for radio? There's billboard/outdoor (which they did and still do) and nobody does much newspaper/print. I havent seen anyone do much internet advertising.

That leaves TV. Slider's point seems to be if you don't buy TV, you're invisible and have no chance. Some people say River's success began with the huge TV buy it did in January. There's no question that Steve&Vikki have succeeded through TV.

On the flip side, if CBS radio believed that its morning show had unrealized upside, they certainly would have been smart enough and rich enough to do it. Ever see any TV for WSB-AM or V103 or the other ethnics? Not every successful station has had to do it. But it is a interesting question: could more TV have saved Dave and the morning show?

As I've said before, I like DAVE. And, I also enjoy the morning show. I don't need ridiculous street audio from the monster truck rally, silly pranks, or planted listener phone calls. They play tunes, they have some interviews, they talk about things that regular people deal with on a daily basis. Works great for me. I just think it's rather funny that people are calling for peoples heads because they have an axe to grind. Joey Mills, for example, can no longer show up at 99x events like he did forever and hang with his radio buddies and collect free tickets, and T-shirts, and CD's, and whatever other prizes he can get his hands on. And, since he worships at the alter of Toucher (along with deadman, who may be the same guy. I don't know and haven't spent time trying to figure it out) and Toucher hates Barnes, people that loved Toucher should hate Barnes to. So, instead of just finding something better to do with your time, you are going to make it a mission to bring down the man your boy hates. Maybe you'll score some Red Sox tickets if you can pull it off....

Again - I have no beef with anyone or any station. All I want is quality entertainment. I don't understand why everything has to be taken so personally. DAVE-FM doesn't entertain the masses and that's why a mexican station in Buford is beating them 12+.

Have you heard Mexican Jam Bands? They blow Anglo ones away!

Comparing Dave's success/lack of success to a Spanish language station is quite irrelevant. Also Deadman, in a previous post you said "stop looking at 12+ - no one bills ads with 12+ numbers".

Have you decided that 12+ numbers are important?

You're right 12+ doesn't matter for ads.
Let's rehash what Ho has said on his blog:

"Dave FM: Wow. Worst book ever for this 100,000 signal and worst in the two years Dave has existed. It ranked just 23rd overall and 16th 25-54. For fans of the station, be worried because it’s had a string of weak performances after a promising start."

Thatta boy! Your vendetta is now supported by consistent claims.

No doubt that Dave is significantly underperforming its signal potential. Maybe Dave should flip to Spanish-language, so they can overtake the station from Buford. And, if O/A can do a Spanish version of their show - even better!

Not sure why everyone is arguing over what can be done - trust me, DAVE FM is done. It's just up to CBS now to decide what is the format hole they'll go after, and I'm sure it'll be something that fits much better with Falcons Football. Look for a change to be made soon.

1. No matter what, bring the well- branded Z-93 name back/drop ‘DAVE’.
2. A two-voice morning show that worked in Atlanta - how about Ross & Wilson? Two very funny, very creative guys who were never too hip for anyone listening, just funny and plugged in to how Atlantans live day to day. Call me a nut, but if these guys (or two similar talents) were put on the air in Atlanta today, 25 years later, they’d knock the bottom out of the ratings.
3. Feature an ‘Atlanta Idol’ or other on-going hourly segment live each hour. You’ll find ensemble players this way to add to the show if needed. Take the only good page from Stern’s used-up show and build a studio big enough for a studio audience. Invite various officials plus folks - listeners love underdogs and it’s reality that can’t be duplicated. *It doesn’t matter how many songs are played in the morning as long as the music’s promoted out the yang.
4. As far as music, play 70’s, 80’s and 90’s hits. Hit music is how 92.9 made its bigs dollars, do it again. Re-packaging the station’s hit music heritage will work with the right energy.

Atlanta’s still a wrestling and weekend keg kind of place – talk to those listeners every morning and invite everybody else.

Kreskin has spoken.

Going all Spanish is not totallly out of the possibility. Anything would be better than what they are now, what are they anyway???????

Go back to the Dance thay did in the mid 80's. That was a pretty hot sound for them.

Here is the perfect solution . . . why don't you log back on as soon as your unpaid internship wraps and bring less of your vendetta posioned ears and a touch more of your "intellect" so neatly and conveniently hidden in that cloack of anonymity you wear oh so well.

The duo of barnes and firfer are by far the best the Atlanta morning has to offer. Smart segments smoothly seguing is what I enjoy and what I consistently find on DAVE. Of course, you will disagree but notice the way I supported my likes without slashing my dislikes. In other words, trying opening your ears and mind before your mouth.

Burroughs, what an auspicious 1st post! And playing the "you're a loser intern" card. What an opening gambit. My, you're off to a mighty start Sir, or Madam. Now I realize a sharpy like you who enjoys the intelligent Barnes and Firfer show might be a tad embarrassed to learn he/she misspelled "cloak". But with a brain like yours it was a typo or you were posting as you were listening to Dave and Barnes said something so mind-boggling interesting and intelligent that you lost your ability to spell a word you've never actually used in a real conversation. One or the other.
I find it interesting that you think the Barnes and Firfer show offers show "smart" fare. Because I think they're just really safe and boring. And somehow, this happens in other cities, too, the pussfooting gets them the reputation as "smart" when really they're just bland, uncreative types who aren't "smart" at all. But then I'm not Barnes like you are, Burroughs, so maybe it's my problem

Seems like Barnes with the condescending attitude(unpaid internship) and calling the show smart? I assume when the mean smart they don't mean intelligence because Barnes never came off as Mr. Genius to me. I think only Barnes would think the show has smart seguing. That's pretty funy. I see the billboarfd already Barnes & Firfer "The best Atlanta has to offer in smart seguing"

Maybe you should at least take a moment to firmly affix your floaties and at least take a glance before diving head first into the dark murky waters of the intellectual pool head. I can assure you, friend, I am neither Barnes nor Firfer and as of recently no longer even a resident of the ATL so slow your roll. I just tire easily of the those who expend all of their energy in a negative sense never once offering any viable solution to the so-called problem they perceive. In any case I appreciate your rather lofty comments in reference to my aforementioned comment regarding internships. I stand corrected - it is now quite obvious you have so much spare time trolling message boards because school's out . . . for summer. And for youngters like you probably forever too. You think you are so damn smart exisiting as if you and you alone have cornered the market on crying like some forlon bitch stood up on prom night. Wouldn't your time be better served wandering the aisles of Wal-Mart compiling school supplies for your the upcoming academic year instead of standing on your parent's front porch staring into the void your life has become desperately awaiting the arrival of a date who is never to appear. Has your translucent existence degraded to slagging the individuals whose labor has produced the fruits you want so badly want to taste? I can almost envision you sitting there salivating your indviduality illuminated from the glow of your computer monitor as your stare at that very fruit as it delicatley hangs just beyond your reach.

Why don't you give your thesarus a rest and tell us how you really feel? How about another one of those delicious diatribes you seem to assemble in the dark. Fill our minds with more of the potshots taken by one couragous bravado-filled mofo such as yourself wearing the armor facelessness anonymity provides the wannabe weak assess of the world. Your argument is weak at best because your finger pointing bitch session is sans alternative. I am quite certain even you know how valuable a venom-laden opinion is in advancing a conversation especially when it is so haphazardly spewed about.

I challenge you to a point by point debate tonight and anxiously await your acceptance highlighted by RTibbs further analysis as he/she attemtps to define what is is to be "genius" and the dulcet discourse offered up by one beef as he/she tiptoes in the dark in another feeble attempt to provide the rest of the world with examples of "smart" radio currently being broadcast in Atlanta. I doubt there will be time for BRENT and his all-encompassing espanol epiphany.

Drawing a line in the sand means nothing unless you defend it too. Rise to the occassion that is of course if your mom hasn't tucked already tucked you in for the night.

Seems I hit a nerve there old feller, and, I assume you're an old guy because you want to take the position of talking down to me. I tire rather easily reading or listening to blowhards so I'll say this as succintly as possible: I think the Regular Guys, as far as doing well-thought out, intelligent humor stand out in Atlanta. I never got to hear them in the porn phase they went through so I can't comment on that era. I thought Toucher had moments where he was very funny and very smart. Not alot but there were flashes. I think Whip is an undiscovered gem in this city. Am I showing my age? The rest of your cheap shots, meh, whatever. Easy to take them and don't you feel like a hypocrite for taking them after chiding me for hiding behind the armor of facelessness (nice writing there chap, truly) but your spelling...it's awful and it reduces your argument. Although trying to argue Barnes and Firfer as intellectually stimulating is laughable anyway so you could spell like a copy editor and you wouldnt convince of anything. Put Mara back there. Your turn, and I think that was a nice, civil return of service.

The morning show on 92.9 is in desperate need of a morning show with gusto.

They need a strong full day lineup, not just a morning show. Here's another reason of many that I hate FM radio these days. So many stations go by "install morning show; problem solved." I don't remember a regulation where a radio station has to become boring once 10 AM hits.

I've had conversations with some old radio friends and thye have come up with 2 new Dave Fm "slogans" that more accurately define the overall presentation of the format

1. Radio without Heart
2. Radio without Soul

any other suggestions?

I am sorry I had an opinion Mr Burroughs. I should bow at the temple of your intelligence and profoundness. Here is my take. I don;t work in radio and have no beef(no pun inteneded) with anyone. I am just what some people would call a listener. I form my opinions based on what I hear coming out of that magic little box. From what I have heard Barnes and Firfer are boring. And don't go down the road of me being their targeted audience. Trust me based on age, salary, time spent listening to the radio and musical likes I am a dream listener for Dave-FM. I love Mara and I loved the Morning X back in the 90's when they were hitting on all cylinders.
