92.9?

This may seem like a weird question, but do you think CBS would ever flip 92.9 to a top 40 station? Similar to like what they did with KLSX (AMP Radio) in L.A.. I'm only asking because I noticed Atlanta doesn't have a Rhythmic CHR. I am not wishing for this, I am just curious.

Yes it is but, is WAY too urban!! And our 2 (so called) CHR's are HOT-AC, at best! I think I see what musicfan is asking. Another good example of CBS doing this is in New York City with 92.3 "NOW-FM" Be nice if they would flip "dave" over to a REAL Top-40. We need a good, solid mix of ALL TOP 40 MUSIC (on one station). From PITBULL to SHINEDOWN to EMENIM to TAYLOR SWIFT to DRAKE...back to back to back to back.......(that's a real CHR)! Atlanta is sorely lacking this format.

Shinedown on top 40? They are a great band, and I like their music. Every other artist you mentioned would fit the format, just go to yes.com and look up the playlists for KAMP in L.A..

The proper time for 92.9/WZGC to flip to Top 40 would have been 1997-99, before there was a 95.5/The Beat or Q100, when Star's wheezy AC format was raking in the big bucks.

Long before DaveFm and before it was Classic Rock, Z93 was a top 40 station that was a big player in Atlanta...Ross & Wilson were their morning hosts. In between, they experimented for a few years as a CHuRban...kind of a CHR/Urban combo...it failed miserably

What would have happened if 92.9 had flipped to mainstream top 40 in 1997 or the Beat had stayed mainstream top 40 after 2001. Would they have made it all the way till today and would they have done well or as well as Star and Q today? I can't understand how anyone can listen to the same songs played every hour on Q and Star. Why are their numbers so great and please tell me how this attracts listeners...playing recurrents and sticking with about ten of the same songs. I laugh at the hometown countdown on Q on Sundays because about half of the top 20 songs are never played on the station because they sound too urban. It's like they had to find some currents to fill in the gap. I love top 40 radio but one of the two needs to go mainstream. I guess my main question is why do these two stations do better as adult-leaning top 40 stations rather than mainstream? Every station that has gone mainstream has done poorly in this market. I know when I listen to a top 40 station, I want variety from the entire current chart. How is it that this recurrent, repititious, and adult-leaning behavior of today on both stations work better?

Z-93 also had Dale O'Brien, Randy Reeves, and Steve McCoy--who replaced Ross & Wilson when they left for NYC. 94Q was the other big top 40 player, but by the early 80s they had already started heading in an AC direction.

Z-93 as Churban had to compete with Power 99, which knocked off Z-93 as the leading CHR in ATL--being a case of the future Q100 affecting someone else for once.

For years and years Z93 as a top 40 station was always the #1 station in Atlanta. Dave is doing good after over a decade of fumbling around as a classic radio guessing game. Remember all the morning shows they tired?

I might be wrong but CBS, like most groups, don't have enough people to give every station in the cluster a 100% effort. Somebody always comes up short. Here, the star biller and main player is V103. CBS isn't about to take on a distraction like starting a whole new format needing a lot of attention and marketing. V103 makes their budget and all they have to do is take care of it and their jobs are safe. The big Frank Ski contract renewal shows they are protecting that investment.

Shinedown has a huge top 40 hit right now in Second Chance

I am in DC right now listening to WTOP. Wouldn't it be great if CBS took Dave and flipped to an all news format? I know it will never happen, but if anybody could make an all news format work, it would be CBS. They and the experts with that format.

WTOP is a Bonneville station and I will say it is even better than the CBS all news stations (WCBS-AM, WINS, WBBM, KFI, etc). WTOP is turely a full service all news stations complete with in depth coverage on some stories... not just reading the headlines. They even have a reviewer on who had already seen the new movies out this weekend.

*sigh*

Back to reality. Atlanta will never have an all news station again.

By the way... before anybody says it... all news will work on FM. WTOP dumped the powerhouse AM signal a year or two ago and is now on an all FM tricast.... and guess what? They are the #1 (12+) station in the DC metro... again.. too much capital outlay for Atlanta to have anything like that.

Also, consider the market. Years ago, DC's TV stations were having 2-hr. local TV newscasts while the rest of the nation had 30-min. local news. In DC's case, with so many world "movers and shakers" in one area, it's the nature of the market, not the size, which makes it scream for an all-news station.

That doesn't mean ATL should not have at least one news station. A couple of years ago, I suggested WGS................ aw, forget it. ::)

I'm waiting for one of our second-tier AMs (you know who you are) to just put on the Fox News feed 24/7 and be done with it.
