This morning I was scanning channels and stop when I heard " Paper Planes ( All I want to do is Boom,Boom, Boom and take your money )" by M.I.A. I was shocked to found out it was Radio 92.9 playing this song. Although is dislike 92.9, I give them credit for thinking outside the box.

WRONG! NOTHING about 92.9 is "thinking outside the box" AT ALL, they are about as mainstream alternative as you can get. Matter of fact, WFNX and Indie 103.1 played that song before 92.9 would even think of playing it, in 2008 when it actually came out. I don't think they play it anymore because it's become a novelty song as it was in some movie trailer, and now that fits more on 92.9's hits/top 40 alternative format.

Im not a fan of this station ( Jockless stations sucks ) but good for 92.9 for playing this song ( and if they are playing a few more non-rock songs ). Maybe I would listen to this station more if 92.9 add some jocks (Im not holding my breath ).

You know what I think is interesting about 92.9? I feel like they talk a lot, but it's all prerecorded. To me, if I were going to have my station talk as much as they do with imaging, then why not DO IT LIVE, as Bill O'Reilly might say!

According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, the PD of Radio 92.9 (I can't think of his name right now) admitted that they let songs get introduced on WFNX first, then basically pick the ones that have become hits. They are definitely heavy on 90s and early 2000s alternative. Another interesting thing about Radio 92.9 is that they completely ignore the Pixies, even though they're a Boston-based band that basically paved the way for the 90s grunge movement. Tisk tisk...

Before the advent of Grunge, Alt-Rock stations would typically play songs from a myriad of genres, including non-gangsta hip hop, current dance and reggae. I'm more suprised, actually, that CHR stations are playing the MIA song because of how conservative their playlists have become.

You are right about the variety Alt stations used to play. I remember in 1981 KROQ/LA played Rick James-Superfreak into Human Sexual Response-Jackie Onassis (some of you in Boston might remember that band). I loved pre-grunge alternative radio. I also did like grunge in the early 90s but it eventually took the fun out of ALT, at least for my tastes.

Because then they would have to pay the jocks for their real time each time on the air, which would be a lot more than for pre-recording liners that are re-used over and over again.
