92 PRO FM Imaging

I know it's a cardinal sin to say something positive on the Providence board, but here goes nothing!

I've noticed an increase in quality of the imaging on WPRO-FM over the past few months... has anyone else noticed this or agree? I'm hearing more custom intros, great liners placed over song intros, a fantastic new legal ID... it's all sounding really great lately! The stations sounds much tighter and more professional than it has in the past few years, at least in terms of audio presentation.

Is Gio still doing the production, or is someone else doing it now?

I have to agree. The top-of-the-hour ID is "louder" and more powerful. They are also using some of the song intros - with the beat of the song and a liner from the artist - that Q-102 in Philly is using. The music also seems less rock-leaning than it has in recent years. Perhaps that is a national CHR trend, but PRO-FM has leaned more toward Dance music. My complaint is still the Ralphie Radio Show. If Scranton can have a local night show, Providence can too.

Enjoy it now, because it will all change once Cumulus gets their hands on it. They'll go back to leaning rock/adult, and get ready for lots of commercials, Hot AC currents and Billy Bush. You'll be missing Ralphie once Billy gets installed in nights. Cumulus CHR's are centrally programmed (just like WSNE) and incredibly boring. It'll be a darn shame...

You have no evidence to back up your doom and gloom. Even after the merger, Providence will still be the biggest Cumulus/Citadel market in the Northeast (outside WABC/WPLJ New York City.) Bigger than Bridgeport, Danbury, Bangor, Poughkeepsie, and Westchester for Cumulus, and bigger than New London, Worcester, Springfield, and whatever else Citadel has in New England.

I'll guarantee you cuts come at underperforming stations in smaller markets before cuts come to a perennially double-digit-share rated heritage station in the company's largest northeast market outside NYC.

EVEN once you get in the building! You'll see cuts to WWKX and WPRO before the golden children, WWLI and WPRO-FM are touched.

Cumulus is corporate, but that's not necessarily a synonym for "idiotic."

I KNEW YOU'D TAKE IT NEGATIVE.

I'd like to remind everyone that the point of this post was to congratulate WPRO-FM on some great imaging.

As far as I know, Gio is still the imaging Guru and has been doing this stuff for 30+ years. He has been doing the bite of song intros for at least 20 years on and off.....that is why Pro is one of the Heritage stations in the country

Take a look at the playlists for WWWQ/Atlanta and KLIF/Dallas. Major market Cumulus CHR's...bigger markets than Providence. Hot Chelle Rae is in power. Maroon 5, OneRepublic, the Script and The Band Perry(!) in the top 20. You'd think there would be more rhythmic records on those stations. There aren't. In fact, Cumulus does not take regional differences into account when programming their CHR's. They just don't. They may keep the drives intact at PRO-FM, but look for them to retool the rest of the station to fit their corporate template. It may take some time after they close, but it will happen. That's not being negative, it's being realistic...

Mainstream CHR's play mainstream hits. Rhythmic CHR's play rhythmic hits.

In Atlanta, you've got 2 Urban AC's (WALR and WAMJ) and three Urbans (WVEE, #1 in the market, WHTA, and WWVA.) Why would they play more rhythmic hits when the market's already saturated?

In Dallas, KLIF is already beaten in the overall numbers by Urbans KKDA and KBFB. KRNB and KSOC are the Urban AC's in the market. Again, why play more rhythmic cuts when the market is saturated? They're trying to go after the Mainstream CHR juggernaut, KHKS.

Back to PRO-FM... Hot Chelle Rae is also a power. Maroon 5, OneRepublic, The Script, and The Band Perry are also in their top 20. Sooooo.... if that's what Cumulus is already doing with CHR, what are they going to change?

Co-owned WWKX "Hot 106.3" covers the rhythmic in RI.

PRO-FM has been PRO-FM since April 1974. It's top 40 music. It bills well. Hell, it makes money! It's had a double digit share for AT LEAST the past six months. Oh, and it's also the highest cuming station in the market.

If they're not going to touch drive time as you claim, where are they going to save money? Jessica? That's peanuts.

You won't see out-of-the-ordinary tweaks to PRO-FM under Cumulus ownership. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Gio does still do all the imaging at PRO-FM and is one of the best in the business at it. As far as Cumulus the best thing they could do when they take over is put the morning show at PRO back to what it was and get rid of those two morons they put on with Gio and Kim and fire who ever made that move right away! Anyone who thinks that Cumulus will not make changes is living in a fantasy world.

Sadly, in this day and age of radio bandit76. For the price of 1 hard working, devoted professional. You can get 2 people that are cheaper with less experience. Who at some point, will move on. And be replaced by even cheaper people with zero experience.

Pretty sure he is doing it for the cluster. Even though he's been there forever, he is an under paid portion of the payroll for all that he does.
