Looks a little 'bland' I guess. Not the talent, the website...

CBS runs all of their spoken-word radio stations, coupled with a the corresponding market TV O&O (if applicable), under CBS[name of city].com portals.

In a major market like New York (WCBS/2, WCBS/880, WINS/1010 and WFAN/660), Chicago (WBBM/2, WBBM/880-105.9 and WSCR/670), Boston (WBZ/4, WBZ/98.5 and WBZ/1030) or LA (KCBS/2, KNX/1070 and KFWB/980) it's not that bad, although it took away the individuality of the station's respective websites.

But in Cleveland, it's a bit awkward, given that this is the only spoken-word station (and a sports station at that), and Raycom owns the CBS-TV affiliate. It makes one wonder if CBS ever would think of purchasing one of the Salem stations (WHKW? WHK?) to run a "Big Talker"-style talk format to flank WKRK...

But it could be worse: CBS runs "CBSAtlanta.com" for their CW O&O, WNPA/69, but Meredith owns the actual CBS affiliate, WGCL/46. Their website is "CBSAtlanta.net."

From everything I've heard or read, CBS would prefer to get out of slow growth, no growth, or declining markets like Cleveland.

Problem is...nobody's buying stations except at dirt-cheap prices...and most owners/groups don't want to take huge losses in order to leave, unless the situation becomes so dire and unbearable it's a "cut your losses" situation. (wonder if Next Media in Canton is nearing that point in time?).

So, CBS is being proactive and investing in their Cleveland cluster. If 92.3 The Fan does great, it would seem like the next move is taking that format to 98.5...and letting classic rock WNCX play out the string on 92.3. The cluster grows, becomes more profitable...so that having to keep their 4 stations in Cleveland becomes less of a drain/hassle on CBS corporate....and, maybe some day, they can sell at closer to what they're looking for.

But, buy more stations in Cleveland? Ahhh...that might be too much of an investment for CBS (or even CC) to want to risk in the economically declining rust belt...unless the price is so low it's insane not to buy.

At this point, it could be 5-10 years before CBS can unload the Cleveland cluster.

If they somehow manage to sell it much earlier, I will be shocked. The economy suggests that CBS' demands - set forth before the Bear Stearns collapse - are utterly impossible to reach, and they aren't in any mood for more fire sales like Denver. Plus all other radio conglomerates are so poorly run as it is, CBS is actually one of the BETTER groups out there.

While we're at it, let's bring up this hypothetical: say, in a year or two, Craig K. could become desperate to unload WKNR if it starts to REALLY hemorrhage ratings/revenue at the hands of both WKRK and WMMS. Would he sell to CBS?

After all, as no other buyer exists that meets CBS's demands, it would seem to reason that no one else would exist that could save Craig K.'s bacon (considering he grossly overpaid for WKNR). CBS can pick it up, and run ESPN Radio 24/7 on 850 to complement WKRK...

There is also a "Mancave Daily" section that isn't live yet (still password protected).

A good example of what to see lies at http://mancavedaily.chicago.cbslocal.com/...

Errrrr...ok. That might be a 'little' better I suppose. I understand that all CBS stations are forced to submit to the 'Cookie-Cutter' approach to website design, I just think that approach is boring and uninspired.

'Tis what it 'tis I suppose.

When that goes live, does this mean that us message board posters are legally prohibited from referring to WMMS as a "man cave"? ::)
