923THEFAN First Impressions

The Bull is no doubt a star. Two days in and he is the best sportstalker in Cleveland.

Cleveland now has The Fan. Also in the last week; Cromwell Group Nashville launches "The Game" and Cox Birmingham launches "Jox 94.5". Soon WYSP to flip to simulcast WIP.

...Kiley and Booms... Booms honestly was as advertised, not very funny and a rather annoying voice. He was poking fun at the fact that fans have been falling out of seats at the Texas Rangers' ballpark....ummm, a guy died there Booms....not cool.
Booms sounds like he's doing a second rate impression of Dennis Miller. Not particularly funny. Just too hip for the room. But to give him some slack, I listened again. Same soup, different bowl.

Adam The Bull... best show hands down. Very entertaining. Surprisingly good chemistry between he and Fox. I was extremely impressed. Great flow, interesting topics, lively discussion.
Agree. Although he sounds a bit like Chris "Bulldog" Parker, one of the guys who's doing p.m. drive at WGR in Buffalo. The animal names in sports radio are amusing. You gotchyer Mad Dog, the Bull, the Bulldog, the Angry Chihuahua... great parody material.

Overall, the Fan is off to a decent start with room to improve. Grade: B-

At least Booms doesn't have a tendency to break out obscure references every five minutes. :-X

I'm having trouble getting past that Dennis Miller impersonation - which I actually noted way back (on the blog) when Good Karma took over WKNR and Booms was begging for a gig there, practically camping out on Kenny Roda's doorstep.

Sure enough, I did, over FOUR YEARS AGO:

http://ohiomediawatch.wordpress.com/2007/03/09/your-weekend-wknr-update/

When we heard him call into afternoon driver Kenny Roda’s show to talk about the Saturday show, we couldn’t help but wonder…did Chuck Booms always sound like he was doing a Dennis Miller impersonation?

We know Miller is about to launch a Westwood One syndicated talk show (non-sports). But when we heard Booms call Roda “Kenneth”, we started to listen for arcane sports and cultural references.

Is he doing this voice on purpose, or is that just what Booms sounds like???

This guy on YouTube has recently been posting old airchecks of Fox Sports Radio's incarnation of "Kiley and Booms" (along with airchecks of former WGST/Atlanta afternoon host Kim "The Kimmer" Peterson).

That is Booms' voice. Although he's far more snarky than cerebral.

Now listening to Bull and Fox for the first time and this show is freaking awesome. About 20 minutes ago, Adam gave a special shot out to this website and OMW.

Listened to most of The Bull and Fox Today..Mentioned on Facebook today that Adam, if he sticks around, could build a following similar to the late Pete Franklin..Though their styles are diffferent, I see these similarities:

Both are from the East Coast..
Both are very knowledgeable
Both have a great On-air presence

I see this show lasting a very long time..Just on the basis of this show, WKNR could be in real trouble..

As it turns out, Andy Baskin gave a plug or two to the Mighty Blog as well. You'd think I bought an ad schedule on The Fan. :D

If anyone HAPPENS to have recordings of either (or any of the three?) mentions, I'd much appreciate it. I was out and about, and only heard Andy's (just after 1 PM) mention.

The Harvard of media gossip sites? :D He even mentioned Nathan in his role as the Secondary Voice (not by first name :D).

I am beside myself tonight. They talked about me more than they talked about hockey! (Sorry, Ron :D)

Anyway, enough about us...

I really am liking the station, my only problem is the stream goes in and out with music when I listen online or my phone.

I've heard you on a few times. You're getting more airtime on the station than OMW is!

:D

It seems that with each passing day Andy Baskin is improving. Still thinks the show needs a bit more energy (which Jeff Phelps will probably help with) but in just a few days there is a huge improvement (in my humble opinion).

My only issue... how much talk about Twitter is really necessary.

Yesterday Tony Rizzo was cancelling his DirecTV service on air while AB was talking sports.

Today's hot topic when I caught up with tRBS? Hammer's planning of a bachelor party for his best friend.

The difference is that Andy and company will go off topic/off the sports reservation from time to time, but Rizzo and the gang live there.

Nobody should get more airtime than you. You are the blog!

Tuning back and forth in the late morning today between WKNR & 92.3 The Fan.

From that half-hour or so of back and forth listening, a quick impression:

WKNR's hosts' content is mostly about them & what they are doing in the their lives with occassional references to sports.

On 92.3 The Fan the main emphasis is about sports, the athletes, the games, the back stories, the interviews, some callers....not mostly about the hosts' personal lives.

Sounds a lot like the comments others have made on this thread recently. Amazing...simply amazing. Surely their consultants aren't telling them to do that, are they? Or, are the rest of us all wrong?

It's almost like they've become about 75% a talk station for men, 25% sports.

If you go back and forth between stations the difference is striking. Anybody else agree? Disagree?

I think you guys realize I meant WKNR when I said...surely their consultants aren't telling them to talk about that other-than-sports/personal stuff so much...like maybe 75% of the time.
