93.1 and 104.3 Music Observations

KPLV has tweaked their music again. This is the most contemporary I ever heard them. Tons of Britney, Lady Gaga, etc. They still do play some rhythmic pop from the 80s, 90s, and earlier this decade but they are more current/recurrent driven than ever. They now straddle the fence between CHR and Rhythmic AC.

NOW FM is being very very aggressive with new music. They play tons of new music. Sometimes they play several brand new songs in a row. Nationally CHR is getting more conservative and recurrent oriented, 104.3 is very much bucking that trend. Their music mix is clearly more unfamiliar than KLUC. KPLV, or KMXB (They even beat Mix in adding Modern AC type songs).

You know Jay ur right. I noticed that too. I was listening last night and they sounded just a bit more current than last time I listened. IMO, I don't care for it - I liked what they were doing before and think they should have kept it. Now it sounding more like a CHR without the rock hits mixed in.

People are wanting these types of stations to crank out the fresh hits - nothing wrong with that but rhythmic AC isn't really going in the direction I thought it would which is too bad.

For a rhythmic AC, I don't understand the direction that Clear Channel is taking PARTY. Why does Clear Channel want to get in to a pissing match with KLUC, KVEG and NOW? I personally wish 93.1 The Party would sound more like KHHT Hot 92 Jamz in LA, also a Clear Channel property. They are about 75% classic R&B/funk/disco, 25% currents/recurrents. It is a great sounding mix...and doing pretty well in the PPM world.

PARTY has CHR type morning and afternoon shows so maybe they thought borderline CHR was a better fit than the music on KHHT. I do agree there is a hole for a KHHT type format (perhaps one of the only format holes left). Another station with a similar format that has excellent ratings is XHRM/San Diego. Maybe this will be what the OASIS switches to after Christmas? It has far better PPM potential than Smooth Jazz. Or maybe this will be the format of either the new 96.7 or 100.1?

icycool, besides not playing rock KPLV doesn't play harder hip hop, even the biggest hits like Jay Z-Empire State of Mind..which is the #1 song on KLUC. Speaking of KLUC, they aren't playing much non-rhythmic product now except for lot's of Taylor Swift and "Fireflies".

BTW, I just noticed 93.1 The Party does mixes from 9-1am, then house music mixes from 1-5am on Friday and Saturday nights... good station if you ask me ;D

104.3 Now FM is way too boring IMO... plus Elvis seems like a total ass on the morning show. JV could do a better job, and DJ Supa James's mixes SUCK!

I didn't hear mixes on PARTY this weekend. But here's what could be the biggest change of all...No Kidd Kraddick in the morning! Instead they have a music intensive morning show, I didn't even hear a jock at all when i was monitoring. With every other station talking so much maybe this is a good move. All music in the morning didn't work with the diary but it's a whole new world with PPM.

I heard it last weekend, but strange there wasn't mixes this weekend (the iheartradio stream for the station was down this weekend so I didn't know). I was listening to PARTY yesterday afternoon and they sounded a lot CHR than rhythmic AC, they were playing "Bad Romance", "3", "Meet Me Halfway", etc. Many CHR hits, you think 98.5 KLUC would be worried?
