93.1-Bad Decisions and Missed Opportunities

Hi everyone. It's Jay F. I used to live on this board. I think it was my favorite thing in life. Hope you are all doing well. I thought I would make a surprise post. I would like to review the bad decisions iheart made with 93.1 over the years.

93.1 had been an oldies station from 1996-2006. Then on 8-30-06 (almost exactly 11 years ago) they dumped oldies to become rhythmic AC PARTY. They dropped oldies at a time when it looked like the format was dying and cc/iheart wanted a younger leaning station. Rhythmic AC isn't really a format as radio would learn...the Party did OK considering...middle of the pack at first. Meanwhile within a year Beasley switched KKLZ from Classic Rock to Classic Hits and has been extremely successful with it. They are currently #1 and have been consistently a high rated station their entire run.

When I see KKLZ at #1 I cant help but think that CC/iheart handed Beasley a big gift. iheart easily could have evolved KQOL into a classic hits...they were already in the process of doing so before flipping formats. If they would have done that there is little or no chance Beasley would have went classic hits with KKLZ. Iheart has huge success with many of their classic hits stations nationally...93.1 could have been one of them but nope they made the wrong decision.

So the Party was doing OK at first. I believe Las Vegas was one of the only markets where Whoppi had decent ratings. Then they decided to tweak the station younger before eventually going full blown Top 40 in a market oversaturated with CHR. That was such a stupid decision. They spent many, many years as a bottom feeder before finally flipping to the MOUNTAIN.

The Party could have gone older instead of younger. There was a big hole and once again Beasley found it and has had many years of success with Old School 105.7. iheart could have had that format but were too stupid to take it! Now CBS is doing well with 100.5 with a younger version of rhythmic oldies. Iheart could have had throwbacks there was such demand for it...but no they had to be the 4th CHR...the most automated of the bunch.

So now they are the Mountain struggling to find a place for themselves as the 3rd or 4th choice of KKLZ and KXPT P1s while meanwhile KKLZ is back at a strong #1.

Bad decisions and bad timing....on what has become the most jinxed frequency in Las Vegas radio history.

Even as a 24 thousand watt station they beam real easy into and out of California along the 15 freeway. They could put up billboards along the 15 hyping the station

Just do proper research on auditorium testing and find a void to fill. 2.4 is what they averaged when they were Kicks country. Maybe fire the program/music director. And get someone that knows the Las Vegas scene to improve ratings and billing.

I would shift the format to classic country and call it the wolf. Vegas has tons of country acts from the 80's and 90's that the casinos could promote on the station and do concert tickets etc. That's a hole worth looking into to fill. But knowing iheart the answer will be no.

Just saw some really great acts coming to vegas. Brooks and dunn. Reba. Shenandoah, George strait. And crystal Gayle. A classic country station would indeed do well in Vegas. That and other family events so far as giving away tickets to a audience aimed at 25 to 54 year old target demo.

Most of the travelers on the 15 are not Las Vegas residents, so most do not have Las Vegas market PPMs. There is not an economic benefit in focusing on Baker.

Auditorium testing is not used to find a format.

Most of the Vegas shows play predominantly to visitors, even when they don't play at the hotels.

Classic country is a predominantly 55+ format, which is a demographic that is not attractive to most advertisers.

@34james You have a good memory of their hit kicking country days in the early-mid 90s. Yes they were a failure. Further proof this is a jinxed signal...no matter what they try it fails. Every market seems to have a signal like this. The one and only very strong ratings period I recall 93.1 ever having was way back in Spring 1985 when they were Hot AC KUDO. They did spectacular that book and fell big time by that Fall.
