93.1 Format Change

93.1 has switched formats from oldies to ryhthmic Hot AC "The Party".

Core artists include Madonna and Prince. Wide range of eras, from 70s disco to more recent dance.. Also, pop artists like Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne are in the mix. Seems targeted towards women 25-49, should appeal to all ethnic groups.

As you can see by my "Movin'" post on this board, I do think there is a hole for this format. I could see this stealing some audience from a wide variety of stations such as KLUC (their older listeners), MIX, STAR, and JACK.

Should another station in the market pick up oldies? In this era, many stations flip from oldies because the demos are too old, few stations flip to oldies. However some stations in Vegas are doing soo bad right now that they might consider it. One scenario that quickly comes to mind is KKLZ going oldies with Kahunna in the morning.

If nobody goes oldies (which wouldn't shock me) where will KQOLs former audience, (which was pretty substantial 45-54) migrate to? The POINT, KJUL, SUNNY? Should stations like the POINT tweak more towards oldies to make former KOOL listeners feel welcome?

Jack fm plays some Cool Oldies, welcome listeners!

Love,

Jack

My prediction is that it will be a wash for you Jack. Yes, some former KOOL listeners will migrate to you since you play some oldies. At the same time, some JACK listeners will check out the PARTY. In fact, PARTY seems like a rhythmic version of JACK to me. I would describe PARTY as "rhythmic variety hits".

I was also thinking that some of KOOLs former listeners will stick with 93.1 and may like the change. I say that because in their final months KOOL was playing a lot of disco.

Seems to me Party would put the squeeze on Star 102.7 (if there's anything really left). Is this finally the end of Star? Former KQOL listeners might end up on KKLZ or The Point. If Beasley knew what they were doing they'd toss some oldies in on KKLZ... however, it seems they've got bigger problems across the board.

I was thinking the same thing, STAR could end up being the biggest victim of PARTY. The other stations Party will steal listeners from a have a bigger base to begin with, but Star is in no position to have more fragmentation.

Any idea if this will effect mix? What about mornings with Whoopi Goldberg? How well does she do in other markets? Can she take the mornings here?

My guess is that they will impact MIX. PARTY plays some Hot AC songs that you would never expect on a rhythmic type format such as "Drops of Jupiter" by Train. That category of music should attract some MIX listeners. Plus, MIX will no longer have the luxury of being the exclusive station to play such big hits as "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", another song I heard on PARTY.

As for Whoppi, she hasn't been on long enough anywhere to see how she's doing in other markets. I'm not sure what her show sounds like but she certainly has name power.

She may have name power, but I heard from someone in New York City that her show is like a train wreck. That it's just plain awful!!!! Her name may attract listeners but then it will be up to them what they think of her. I, for one, will NOT be one of those people. Anyways, Que Sera Sera!!!

I think they're expanding Whoopie to additional markets way too fast. The show is still very green and Whoopie doesn't have a proven morning radio resume like Rick Dees, Steve Harvey, or Tom Joyner. Besides, I'm guessing the show will be tape delayed due to the fact it originates on the East Coast. Importing more and more morning radio is bad enough but when they import shows from the East as tape delayed brodcasts for the West.... that's really lame. I agree, Mix 94 has got to be the biggest loser here. CC probably saw how big those numbers were getting for Mix the last few periods... and of course the fact they now have a better sales combo for 101.9 and Sunny. Not sure what direction Beasley can take Star. With Xtreme continuing to lean towards FM talk and the urban and spanish formats now utilizing good city grade signals, most of the popular (money demo) formats are now taken in Vegas. I'd tell em to take on someone head on... but we've all seen how that's gone with Coyote. I know it was about money but KJUL never should have been trashed and country should have been playing on 102.7 by now.

STAR should have evolved into a Variety Hits station before JACK beat them to the punch last year. The 80s thing was running it's course and VH would have given 102.7 a new life. Oh well that missed opportunity is ancent history now, especially with the addition of PARTY, I see STAR headed for a world of hurt.

Actually, that's what I heard happened to the poor excuse for a radio station - STAR. Star wanted to become JACK and had the entire library loaded in the automation. Then Infinity/CBS flipped it just days before Star was supposed to switch. Now here is where the strory gets even funnier. Star is already running "Star Party" on their HD2 according to Ibuiquity. I heard that CC was going to wait until Monday or Tuesday after Labor Day to make the switch because of a huge KOOL-sponsored event this weekend. But someone at CC got word that Star was planning to switch to a Party format on September 1st. So CC had to move up the lauch of their Party format to prevent Star from switching.

If these "rumours" are true, that means that Beasley has been bitten in the ass twice now. Hahahahahaha!! Now what will Star do with their tired old 80's format? I guess that they'll keep Puttin' On The Ritz! Hahahaha!!!!

Just because someone does it first (even if it's only days before) doesn't mean you can't go ahead with your plans. It's not a "I've got dibs" on this and that format.... I say go ahead and do it... it can't be any worse than what they're doing now. If anything, the listener of this format benefits by hopefully a good competiton which used to create better radio.

I enjoy your posts, but disagree with you on this point. Formats like Party are too niched for a second station to come on days latter with the same thing. Even if one was slightly better than the other, they both would do terrible.

Same thing with Jack. I remember in the Spring of 2005 CBS was putting on Jack stations in every market they could. In a few places, such as Boston and San Francisco, other companies beat CBS by a day or two in putting on Variety Hits stations. As much as CBS believed in Jack, they cancelled their plans in those markets, they knew that no market could support two VH stations.

Party Pooper

When 93.1 changed last week, my wife announced that it was now her favorite station. She had it on every radio in the house. That lasted about three days before she started saying "they play the same songs over and over." Since I know that's a common listener complaint for ANY format, I started paying attention, just to see if she was right. By the time I heard "Double Dutch Bus" for the third time in three days, I went around the house and turned all the radios off. The Party was great for about 3 days, but it's now pooped out.

Give it a few weeks or months. Whenever a station changes format--well, most of the time--they'll have a super-tight playlist of their strongest songs to make the statement of who they are, then they'll start to expand a bit.

93.1 The Party has a similar playlist to another new Rhythmic AC in Philadelphia. That would be "Philly's 106.1". Personally I find these stations a mess.

How many times can you hear Mambo #5? Some of the music on Philly's 106.1 isn't even rhythmic.

CC is just doing this for Whoopi Goldberg.
