93.1 in Columbia

When will Mike Willis be taking over 93.1? Has anyone heard what they are planning to do with it? Will they keep their LP and simulcast?

They are waiting for the Bankruptcy Court to approve the transaction outside of the transfer from Inner City to YMF Media. The court date is Thursday the 18th. Once the Bankruptcy Court rubber stamps the deal, the transaction paperwork will be filed with the Commission and you are probably looking at a closing in 30 days after FCC approval.

Richard Peterson and Mike Willis have agreed to buy WZMJ Batesburg-Leesville through a newly formed entity Lake Murray Broadcasting.

They cannot have an interest in the LPFM simultaneously with WZMJ. Under the current rules, only educational institutions (colleges and universities, mainly) and government entities can have an LPFM license as well as a full power license.

I am assuming they will move "Lake Murray Radio" over to WZMJ.

And this begs the question: What happens to the license for 107.9? Are they allowed to "sell" it? Or do they have to turn it in? Does this mean that the license for 107.9 is up for grabs?

They can transfer it to another non-profit or qualified licensee for consideration equal to the value of the physical assets being sold... basically equipment and the like.

The question is, given the facility cannot be improved by a minor change application, what the advantage would be in acquiring the 107.9 facility. A filing window is coming up and you can start off with a clean slate and better engineered license for less.

If the signal cannot be improved, I don't see how anyone could make a go of it. The signal is sketchy at best. There are many parts of Lexington where it's unlistenable. I understand they had been trying to move the stick and get another channel allocation but had been unable.

They were trying to get a waiver of the "major changes only in a window" rule because WNKT moved in and effectively limited their signal. Without being privy to the Commission's stated reasons for denial, it was probably because the deference would have extended only to the original licensee.

At this point, if you have to wait for a filing window anyways, why not do your own engineering and the like and get a better facility from the get-go?

RadioOCD:

Good for them! I am rooting for Richard and Mike to succeed. If they can replicate the success and hometown feel that WPUB has in Camden, I think they are on the track for longevity.

Is it me or does 93.1 sound like it's broadcasting from a walkie talkie?
Does anyone notice the audio sounding bad: tinny, distorted, low volume level, etc. ? or is it just me?

It sounded ok to me. Clearly monophonic satellite audio. Definitely not as bad as AM 56 which is absolutely unlistenable.

Could be that Inner City has already cut their STL costs and they are using a phone line to feed Batesburg-Leesville. My recollection is that they has a microwave link in place, though.

IMO, 93.1 IS a LEXINGTON station! I haven't seen any problems in Lexington unless your in the valleys near Red Bank and the scanner in your car skips over it. Other than that, 93.1 isn't affected unless a DX occurs and WEAS takes over.

560 sounded OK on my radio yesterday when I had to come to Columbia to the Endocinologist...... but 1400 was horrid.

I guess I didn't make it clear but my reference was to the 107.9 signal.

I stand corrected Al. Yeah, I agree. I was riding around Lexington last night and 107.9 was very sketchy in spots.

Powell,

On my radio (which admittedly is a German unit) 560 sounds like a telephone receiver. 840 is actually ok. 1400 is as bad as 560.

There is no excuse for playing music on AM. Seriously. The BEST AM processing will not rival any other source for that same music.

Actually, if you turn off IBOC and adjust the processing right, AM can sound almost as good as FM. 1500AM in DC used to sound as good doing all-news as their FM's. But the engineering has to be spot on. Most AM stations these days (and all of them in this market) are all afterthoughts.
