93.1 To Take It "Easy" After Christmas?

The domain Easy93.com was registered by Cox/Miami's Interactive Resource Manager on the heels of 93 Rock's switch to Christmas music.

Perhaps they'll run a format similar to sister station WDUV in Tampa, which has been number one for eons in that market? (Then again, from what I've read, even "The Dove" has stopped playing a lot of instrumentals, so it won't be 24/7 elevator music.)

While this topic has been addressed and Mr. Eduardo feels differently, I think a WDUV-like format can do well in South Florida. While the competition for ratings would be intense - we all know how successful Lite and Magic are - an "Easy" format might bill very well.

If Cox can knock down Lite with an Easy format, you know what that means? Coast could be closer to being the #1 station in Miami. Based on cume, Lite is #1 and Coast is #2. Stealing from Lite is the way to go.

Smart move.

This would be great, if...."easy" does not include REO Speedwagon....

cd

CD, I have not been south of Miami since early summer, and I was thinking about this the other day....How is Coast's signal south of the city and into Homestead?

soft/easy makes no sense, isn't wduv number 12 in billing in tampa? i can't see cox wasting a big signal to not be a top billing station

Just what we need again in South Florida. Another station that will play Billy Joel, Elton John, Gloria Estefan, etc...Because LITE, COAST, WRMF, and SUNNY aren't enough.

As far as I see it, this will fail too. Remember Planet 103?

I think that if it will be "easy", it can't be another Coast, as Cox has that already.

The emphasis might be on the music, not so much the artists. Just something soft and relaxing. Carpenters, Sinatra, Como, Bread, Lobo, Neil Diamond, Manilow....Yes I know these are bad words in radio today, but if they just promo the music itself and not the artists, it can't hurt any worse than what they have been doing in the last few years. And, for sure, it'll be *different* from the rest of the dial.

@ Scott: I don't listen to Coast much, but 97.3 is as close to a clear channel (lower case "c") FM as she gets.....I think it's fine on any car radio into Key Largo & even below that.

cd

Thanks, CD. It is precisely because it is a near-clear channel that I never listen to The Coast when south of Miami! As you know, I am always looking to DX!

Keep in mind that WDUV is on a rim-shot signal.

WDUV is an upgraded Class B with 33 kw at 1550 feet. That's less than a full C, but with a site located nearly on top of the Pinellas / Pasco county border, it has a 60 dbu that covers 90% of the territory and 95% of the population of the metro.

Since it is licenced to a community in the MSA, not to one outside the metro, and has a transmitter site nearly in the dead center of the metro, it's hadly a rimshot.

More like 14th. The issue is that, although WDUV is a lot more contemporary in recent years, it is also about 14th in 25-54, although seemingly growing.

Tampa St. Pete is about 28% ethnic, while Miami is 70% or a bit more.

i think it's a rhythmic lean focus. maybe not another party, but a party-type station. focus it on y100 and power96 to bring them down a few and help push wedr up to number one again. plus it could also take out some from 93.9 which in turn could help coast out at the same time. it's all about positioning in this town.

David - If I am not mistaken, I believe WDUV is a class C1 and not an upgraded class B as there are no B's in Florida. The class B equivalent in Florida is a class C2 as both C2's and B's operate with a maximum 50kw ERP at 492 Feet HAAT or its equivalent. Class B's are restricted to the Northeast, Southern California, the San Francisco bay area, the U. S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. All other areas have class C's and sub class C's (class C, C0, C1, C2 and C3).

Below is the WDUV FCC link showing its class as a C1. However, you are absolutely correct that WDUV is far from being a Tampa Bay rimshot.

Sorry, brain f--t here. I meant to say it was a modified (upgraded) class A. 105.5 was originally a Class A channel, but following the changes brought on by the unfortunate Bonita Springs case, A's were allowed to upgrade class, move to a channel of a different class, change COL, etc.

You mentioned the zones for B's... I don't know if you noticed that Puerto Rico has super B's and super A¿s. B's are 50 kw at 1000 feet, and A's have a comparable height advantage over conventional A's.

The only problem I see with the "Easy" format is that Cox has too narrow of a play list and tends to play the same songs over and over again. The did that when they owned a station in Dallas back in the 90's. If they are going to do that format, they are going to have to think ouside the box and expand the play list or they will tank. There is a lot of music that is not beeing played.

InSearchOfGear, I stand corrected. I was relying on personal experience. WDUV never seemed to come in all that well on a Walkman when I have tried in St. Pete Beach or in Clearwater.

WDUV is #1 in the Tampa Bay market, so the format gets numbers. The issue, no matter how many songs they play, is that most of the audience is 65+ and thus harder to sell.
