93.1 To Take It "Easy" After Christmas?

i'm going with that hit/dance mix, maybe they will bring back the party staff again since most of them still work within the company in other markets?

I still dont think it's going to be Dance. Too much CHR/Dance/Urban competition.

I really think it's going talk. And if not, there's a compelling argument to go soft AC -- mainly to hurt Lite FM and that, in turn, will boost Coast. (Cox followed the same strategy in Atlanta, taking one of their stations Urban AC to try to hurt the #1 station at the the time. And the market was already flooded with urban stations! It worked -- for at least a little while)

im not buying into the soft ac debate

i think either talk or some form of CHR will come to 93.1 on 12/26

or could cox keep the christmas music until 12/31 then start stunting around 6pm then kick off the new format at 12am ?

But doesn't the "EASY" kind of give it away that it's a soft AC station? How many Easy station's out there are FM Talk, Dance, Top 40?

If Cox applied for Easy93 as a web domain, to me it hints a WDUV Tampa or WMMO Orlando format.

It could also be a smokescreen. :)

I could very well be. I posted this reply prior to knowing that Cox applied for like 8 more web domains for 93.1. (link in new topic) - Cox playing Cat and Mouse with 93.1 :-X

My best guess is 93.1 will either become South Florida's talk station (as there is no talk on FM in the market) or it will become some form of hit music to compete with Bealey's WPOW. On the other hand we may all learn South Florida has a new country station although this possibility is doubtful. Don't be surprised, however, to hear most anything, including country, during the stunting phase if Cox chooses to stunt.

After reading this on Radio Insight....

The domains: 931TheRiver.com, Eagle931.com, Hits931.com, HotTalk931.com, TheBeat931.com, TheBone931.com, TheZone931.com, and Z93Miami.com were all registered by Derick Pitts’ Radio Free Productions on December 6 following our report of Easy93.com

....my opinion of what will happen to 93.1 has changed slightly. I was a firm believer that the station would go talk. Not so much anymore. "hot talk?" Really? sounds like a boring name for a talk station. Very 1990. This isn't James Crystal we're talking about here. It's Cox.
Let's run through the possible domain names, shall we? :D
River? no way. There is no "river" in South Florida. Eagle would also have no connection to Miami. Hits is too generic. Bone? Zone? nah. Now, The Beat is a possibility if they were looking at Power as the competition, as is Z93 if they were to go directly after Y100.
I still think that Eazy might work. It would pull the older demos from Lite and, by default, help Coast to topple the market's powerhouse.

So, my picks in this order: Soft AC; some form of CHR; then Talk.

My guess is Z93 Miami (Top-40 "Party"), or Party 93.1 will be back in a Top-40 form.
I think www.z93.com has been registered recently...

A hit based format using the Z 93 moniker would be a good move for 93.1 considering the general demographics of Miami - Dade and South Florida.

i spoke to someone in orlando who is saying that there are discussion with eric valez about moving back to miami. that would mean they are looking at a chr/dance format and possibly even bringing back party 93.1. i can't see easy 93 being a possibilty and remember that they already own and have a webpage for party931.com so there would be no reason to do anything except maybe some updating. i'm starting to think the whole easy93.com was a diversion from the start.

Today 93.1 is calling itself Easy 93 and telling us to be ready on Dec 26 for easy favorites.

Nothing more edgy than "Joanna" by Kool & the Gang, and I'll be satisfied....
After all, Cox already has Coast for the rest of the spectrum.

cd

I'd look for the sharp COX people to gradually move COAST into a more HOT AC direction while going with the Soft and Easy faves on 93.1. And its a great plan.

Look at what CBS has done with success in San Diego with an AC (KYXY) and HOT AC (Sofie).
Also Bonneville in Chicago has found success moving MIX more contemporary and WILV a gold AC.

What remains to be seen is how this does in Miami, a market that is over 50% Hispanic vs. your examples of Chicago (less than 20%) and San Diego (less than 30%). If softer AC is the choice, it will be interesting to see the outcome.

If softer AC is the choice, it will be interesting to see the outcome.

If they take an easy simple full share from LITE with EZ and just a half share from Y100 with a correctly executed tweek of COAST, the outcome would be to boost revenues of all the COX properties. I'd see an EZ format scoring at least that much with the right AC approach, something they certainly have perfected.

Anything would make more money than that rock format.

Yeah, Mike, great idea. Y'all watch Dick Clark, while I huddle around the radio listening to a format flip... ::)
