93.3 adjustment

93.3 The Planet has dropped the "New Rock" moniker and is now "93.3 The Planet Rocks." They have a new logo, too. I guess this is in response to the move away from current/recurrent material in recent times towards a more mainstream rock format.

This is the 4th Entercom station to see changes this year. Magic got new jingles and a re-position to "Better Music" after Christmas, Rock 101 became Classic Rock 101.1, WORD updated their brand in response to the AM changes and now The Planet.

I think they dropped the "new" so they can get a way with playing things like Aerosmith, AC/DC, older Metallica and the like. Other than some of that older stuff there's nothing at all "mainstream" about the station's playlist.

Take a look at this:

Particularly the left side of "newer" music, 99% of it's the same loud crap they've been playing forever.

Maybe no one can pick on them now for playing 30 year old songs on a "new rock' station but it still is active rock.

Will that change? I hope so and maybe that's the long term plan, but as of now they sound just as bad, if not worse than they did a year ago.

I think it would be beneficial to everyone if they even went to something like Rock 93.5 in Columbia, which leans active but plays a good amount of more mainstream/alternative tracks. Anything is better than what the Planet plays now.

I really see little reason not to merge the rock formats on 101.1 and 93.3. The finished product would be a hybrid of both, with a slightly harder sound and less 70s rock and no 00s rock. Make a heavy emphasis on the 80s, with some 70s and 90s. 96.7 covers traditional classic rock fine, and 98.5 plays the decent new rock (it's not like 93.3 is playing much new rock). At this point, it just seems redundant to have 2 stations like 101.1 and 93.3. I don't think the current Planet approach is viable long-term, and Classic Rock 101.1 is going to have to modernize eventually.

The Planet's playlist has been the same forever, as evidenced by that link. Same crappy bands that have been around forever. Why the heck are they playing "Bittersweet Symphony?" That playlist is just a disaster.

Was looking at what was actually played during the day instead of the full playlist just to see if anything is perhaps changing on-air. Short answer: No. Long answer: It's worse and it really, really does look like the only purpose in perhaps losing the "New Rock" out of their moniker was indeed to give them license to play more older songs mixed in with all the other crap they play. Seriously, they played AC/DC enough times today that you'd think they were some hot new band. Add in Metallica, Def Leppard, Black Sabboth and Aerosmith and you've got a pretty complete picture of what they've done. Just added back in the 80s (and in the case of AC/DC some '70s) tracks they were playing. The rest of the playlist is just the same old hard rock ranging from Korn to Five Finger Death Punch. Another change may be a bit less of the '90s alternative such as Green Day ... but just as much, if not more, grunge. This station deserves to die.
