93.3 FLZ

So ever since Hot 101.5 switched to R&B, I’ve been noticing people have been complaining about FLZ but I’m wondering why?? Is it because of the music selection or is it just the same songs being played over and over again every hour?

Well since it's owned by iheart, I'm guessing it'll be about the same songs being played over and over.

Well I’m not in their desired demo, so my opinion probably doesn’t matter, but I think they are playing too much gold. Hearing a Katy Perry hit from 15 years ago next to a top 10 hit from today is very jarring. It works on Hot AC because they are selective with their currents. But on a CHR it doesn’t flow well.

Sure, CHR has always been repetitive, but it seems like many are repetitive not just over weeks, but over seasons, years and even decades.

In the past, what WFLZ played in 2005 would have been very different music from what it was playing in 2004. If you compare what WFLZ is playing today, I think it would have many of the same songs are the same ones being played in March 2023. 2023 hits are still being considered "currents". Then add in the golden oldies from Usher, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, etc. That's very repetitive.

Ever since PM DJ's Ratboy and Staypuff left in 2014 they have not had any personality that I would turn to on FLZ. That was the beginning of the end of investing in their on air product.
In my opinion they now play more ads since they are the only Hit station. If not at least longer breaks overall.
Right now waiting for Taylor Swift to cycle out of songs. (if and when it happens) Will listen to them ever though I'm not in the target demo range.

Seems I recall that CHR/Top 40 has ALWAYS been about playing the same songs over and over?
That's true. When Mike Joseph programed a station I was on we played hits like Sugar Sugar once every 70 minutes or so. It was an inside joke among the jocks to say sarcastically " Pour a little sugar on me" off air.

CHR is struggling musically and has been for a year or so. I would argue since 2021 when Kate Bush's song became popular 40 years later. NSync, Backstreet Boys don't belong on CHR in 2024.

So, in alot of cases these CHR mains should probably shift to Rhythmics. The problem is programmers dont see the Rhythmic audience as a growth audience on terrestrial radio. Then if the market already has a Hip-Hop, plus an Urban on top of that, its another saturation issue. Could shift gears and go Alternative, but thats not a desirable audience right now.

So the strategy is stick with it for now and see if its a phase in the format in case things improve.

You can do a rhythmic leaning CHR without going deep into Hip-Hop. The issue is more about excluding the more rock leaning songs of all kinds and the non-rhythmic ballads as well.

Right. But I would argue thats the problem for CHR right now. The rock leaning stuff and non Rhythmic ballads don't mix well with the Rhythmic tracks.

I prefer Rhythmic/CHR over the Top 40 format but hasn’t Rock and Rhythmic always been part and parcel with Contemporary Hit Radio? As far back as the late 1970s some CHR would alternate between playing a Rock snd a Disco record.

I was involved with Top 40 CHR stations in Puerto Rico for quite a few of the years from 1970 to 2022 that I was working at or consulting stations there. All played a percentage of English language hits, but always they were rhythmic.

I love the rhythmic CHR concept without basically being a hip hop station, which seems to be rare, at least in the southeast. My market (Greenville-Spartanburg) has a "rhythmic CHR" in WHZT, but most of the times it sounds like a Hip Hop station. Same with WKHT in Knoxville and most other rhythmics in my region I can think of. They aren't rhythmic variations of CHR, they're hip hop stations programmed with enough non-hip hop tracks to stay on the rhythmic panel.
