Ok, but why?

The easiest, most accurate and more logical action to take in answering that question is to contact John Starr, Market Manager for the three Asterisk Gainesville stations comprising of WBXY, WXJZ and WYGC, and ask Mr. Starr direct if there is any agreement between Asterisk Communications, Inc. and Reach Communications, Inc., respectively, to re-broadcast WBXY over W227AV Newberry, respectively. Regardless what Mr. Starr says, you will have your answer at the end of the call.

I say again, it's a rebroadcast agreement. This was in a previous thread. Reach wants to rebroadcast WBXY. What's the confusion? Not trying to sound like a jerk. That's what is going on. No need for clarification through any phone calls. Trust me. ;)

The confusion is WHY they want to rebroadcast. What purpose does it serve? They are gaining no extra ground.

Well, if you think about it, the answer could be that Reach needs to rebroadcast something or they will loose the translator. So, they might strike a deal to rebroadcast WBXY to preserve their license until they do something else later.

There ya go, Mr. Kmagrill! You win the prize!
I just can't go into specifics.

They may lose the translator anyway. When WJBT powers up to 100,000 watts, Clear Channel should be able to force the Newberry translator off the air, citing 'interference concerns.' The translator could relocate of course, IF they can find another open channel...and that's a BIG "if."

Though certainly not impossible, it's extremely hard to force translators off the air or to even get them changed to alternate channels. Interference complaints have to be the result of documented current listeners that cannot hear the primary station, usually within a year of the translator's first going on the air. Also, the station cannot solicit complaints from its audience. They have to be spontaneous, documented and timely.

The WJBT protected contour is about 20 miles NE of Gainesville and the translator is 10 miles west of Gainesville. Due to the distances and lack of interfering contours from the translator, I doubt that it will go silent as a result of WJBT's upgrade. More likely, WJBT's 40dBu interfering contour will fall over the translator's 60dbU and drastically reduce the translator's coverage to a small area around Newberry.

If you know something the rest of us don't know, then please share what you know. Otherwise, if you are unable or unwilling to share, it makes perfect sense, for anyone who is interested, to go directly to the "horse's mouth" for clarification purposes. I, for one, will not be making any calls as it makes no difference to me, personally, one way or the other.

I wouldn't call them either. Definitely not that big of a deal.
