93.3-The Planet & 98.7-Simon RULE!

All of you posters who complain about Charlotte Radio should try Active Rocker 93.3-The Planet-WTPT-Forest City/Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson.

This station is creating quite a buzz in Charlotte.

It's easily listenable w/it's 100kw monster, powerhouse, flamethrowing, blowtorch signal.

They have alot of great features, such as a CD side weekend, Mandatory Metallica, & others too numerous to mention.

One word describes it: Variety!

Veteran, legendary programmer Mark Hendrix programs this station, as well as Classic Rocker Rock101.1/WROQ.

newrock933.com

Another great station is 98.7-Simon-WSMW/Greensboro.

Simon-We Play Everything!

An indescribable concept -

A morning show (with legendary Jeff Wicker, Carmen, & Skip the Prize Guy) form a Family Friendly AM show) - then, there's no Radio Hosts/Personalities/Jocks for the rest of the day! Just funny breakers between the songs. They'll play Sinead O'Connor, then AC/DC!

I know automation is putting us jocks out of a job, but it's a great way for a Radio Co. to make money!

987simon.com

Easily listenable in Charlotte.

Even though Charlotte is the largest city between DC & Atlanta, it shows you that bigger is not always better - these station are in smaller cities.

Listen, & you may be pleasantly surprised!

<Rant>

Sorry, I just refuse to listen to an automated JUKEBOX on my radio.

if all they are going to give me is music, commercials and prerecorded liners, I would rather listen to my CD Player. When I do that, I can choose my own music and have no commercials.

Don't get me wrong about commercials, I can tolerate commercials on a real radio station, and commercials were the source of my paycheck for 30 years. I just want more than music on my radio when I am listening to commercials too. I want entertainment and information, something you just cannot get without a real jock in the mix.

This is the reason I listen to radio less and less every year.

Flame proof suit now in place.

What makes this Wicker person "legendary"? I've been around the block a few times and never heard of him.

Jeff Wicker....Hmmm....he started out as Henry Boggan's producer on WBT, then was on WBCY in its "Charlotte's Best Rock" days. Then he left the area for 20 years or so and next shows up on Simon's predecessor, "The Zone".

I don't know if that makes him "legendary", but it does say something for him.

Later....

Notice that both these stations are owned by Entercom. The Planet sounds as good as 106.5 did back in their Dalton Group days. Simon - Eh, just a jukebox, I can jump around on my presets and get the Simon mix.

I love the Planet too and really enjoy the Rise Guys morning show. One of the best, if not the best morning rock shows. I am surprised they haven't gotten a sydnication deal yet.

Neil

Skip Church, half of the rise guys used to be at the Link. At The Planet the most notoriety they've gotten within the business is straight ripping off Lex and Terry bits.

Jeff Wicker was the morning guy at WBCY for a bit. I believe he was the guy who decorated the men's room with MAD magazine stickers. I don't think he's quite legendary, but he's had some great success and is a genuinely nice guy. Probably WSAT's most legendary alumni. As for Simon, I liked The Point much better.

Where has Wicker had great success? All I can find out about him is that he did poorly at Q-94 Richmond (my hometown) and is not doing well now at 98.7. Did he do well in Charlotte?
The little I've heard of his show is very generic stuff. I admit I haven't heard that much.

After he left WBCY, he had the dominant morning show on WZOK in Rockford, a shadow market to Chicago, for years. When R&R would release their quarterly reports with the top ratings getters in the country, he was consistently on the list for morning drive.

During WBCY's more glorious top 40 days, the daily lineup started out as:
6a to 10a: John-Boy & Billy
10a to 3p: Jeff Wicker
3p to 7p: Fred Story (spelling?)
7p to 12p: Cynthia Clarc
12p to 6a: (don't recall as I never listened then)

Sometime in 82 or 83, Fred Story and Jeff Wicker switched shifts. Fred Story did mid-days 10a to 3p. His show featured a segment from noon to 12:30 called the Blue Plate Special, which was a music magazine type show with news about artists. The segment also included Roger Ebert's highly-produced "Movie News". Jeff Wicker moved to afternoon drive where he stayed for most of the rest of the decade! In 87 and 88 (when Jack Daniel was PD and the positioner was changed to "All Hit 108"), Jeff Wicker and Dianne Tracey essentially did afternoon drive together, with Tracey's focus primarily on traffic. I always thought Wicker had a great personality and apparently most of Charlotte at that time thought so too. He seemed to work great with Dianne Tracey too.

I'm actually quite surprised. I thought more folks would remember Wicker's long ride at WBCY.

::) ??? How long have you worked for Entercom AMFMDude.. Those people are definately not Hertiage, Legendary Jocks...Perhaps you are too young to have actually heard any! Simon definately does NOT "RULE" but rather Su*k...How much does a PR man make at Entercom?

Wonder if Entercom is looking for a LINK to Charlotte?

Leave it to big ape to act like big ape...showing his bright red a$s and flinging lots of pooo .

Good job, armchair. What, exactly is YOUR gripe with all the good radio stations on the dial in the area? You haven't said anything positive about any of the top 5 rated stations in your history of posts. :p ;)

Hey Big Ape,

I don't work for Entercom.

Alright, I take back that Wicker is a heritage, legendary jock.

I'm old enough (probably older than you), &, have actually heard many (too many to list) & not just in this market.

IMHO, I think Simon is one of the best sounding facilities/outlets.

I don't know how much a PR man makes @Entercom.

What is your opinion to Entercoms' 93.3/The Planet (if you can receive it?)

Salesclozer, I hope you can sell better than you can post..AM/FM I started in this "mess " November 1965...So if you have been around that long..You too have OFD.. No I cannot get the Planet..At the present, I am in Cocoa Beach ,!

Hey Big Ape,

Are you related to "The Big Ape" 95.1WAPE/Jacksonville?

Used to live there.

What is OFD?

I'm 51 - the legendary heritage jocks I've grown up with are Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy & Dan Ingram from MusicRadio77WABC.

Also went to school & worked w/Fred from the Stern show.
