Why can't this station do something? It seems like a total waste of a frequency???

Is it the format, or the coverage? A lot of people like CCM and Fish doesn't cover that part of the metro. I know you don't like religious formats--but hey-I don't like alt, so to each his own.

Speaking of coverage, the location isn't the best. They do have a CP to go up to 88k on a slightly shorter tower, which will improve their coverage in Auburn/Opelika and Columbus, and to a lesser extent Macon and the south metro. But even then the city-grade signal will still only reach Hartsfield and Six Flags.

But despite that, they still show up in both the ATL and Columbus books--while only city-grading half of Columbus, which the CP will fix.

I remember when this station was called WFDR. It was like a good soul station I think, about 1970's..And was a full 100k..

Were they further south/west? I'm assuming they can't go any closer to ATL because of Z90Dave being a second adjacent.

That's correct. I think their attempt to become an Atlanta station was ill conceived. Before the move to the current site, they used to target Macon, Manchester, etc. As powerful as that signal is--and it will knock out Dave-FM when you're nearby--the site is just too far from Atlanta to be competitive.

To my knowledge, WFDR-AM is still located in Manchester and still owned by J93's parent company, Watkins.

While in Manchester, J93 ("The Joy FM") had a good solid base primarily south of Atlanta, especially in Columbus, Macon, LaGrange and Fayette and Coweta counties.

I'm not sure what prompted the move into Peachtree City to try to become more of an Atlanta station, but the biggest hurdle that they have yet to overcome is signal issues. By now, though, the Fish has so much of a stronger hold in the Atlanta metro area, not to mention a stronger signal, that J would be well-served to focus more (once again) on those southern areas that the Fish's signal can't reach.

Yeah, but the Fishs' signal I have carried all the way past LaGrange..It has a huge coverage area...More than you know..

Like I said on another thread, I have gotten The Fish clearly as far NW as Adairsville and Calhoun, and spitting in and out into Dalton just like most 100k ATL proper stations. Remember, Fish's tower is roughly halfway to Athens, between Loganville and Monroe (and near the town of Between, GA). For the record, I think the only ATL FM I have taken all the way to Chattanooga is B98.5. And The Fish shows up in the Macon book (http://www.radio-info.com/site/markets/grid/macon WTH?). Maybe it's that tall tower (over 1/2 kilometer HAAT), despite 24k watts.

During the roughly six weeks I spent in Chattanooga in '01, B-98.5 was a consistent catch there. The old Fox 97 was always audible there, but you had to deal with reverb from 97.3 South Pittsburg, then known as Love 97.3/99.3/103.5. So, it wasn't really much of a listening option. I also found Peach 94.9 was a regular on the home stereo as well as 96 Rock.

OT: That's impressive. What kind of antenna were you using? In my experience, most home receivers don't have the best sensitivity/selectivity vs. a car radio.

I'd gotten Fox as far east as Columbia, SC.
